High guys....

I've just flogged my 9800XT on ebay for £210. Now i need something to replace it with. My budget extends to just about any card, be that the x800XT or the 6800 Ultra

can someone recommend me some brands that are good? I have been looking at XFX and BFG 6800 Ultras. As for ATI's...well cant actually see the XT for sale anywhere...but the brands I have looked at are Club3D, Sapphire, Connect3D and PowerColour.

What do you guys reckon? My inclination is to go with the 6800Ultra mainly because of the advanced features it offeres compared to the x800. Any help would be much appreciated and I do not want this to turn into a flame war of any sort. I am open to any and all suggestions as long as they are reasoned and well thought out....Also I need to place the order 2moro so if you guys can sort me quickly then I would be very grateful.

BFG 6800U is your best bet if you can find one. 6800GT is also excellent, the best value.

i have come across a brand called "point of view" has anyone heard of them and if they are any good?

BFG > (just slightly) eVGA, those are the two I look at. PNY is pretty icky, don't know XFX.

Nope, but they got a cool logo :D

Anyone making/selling the 6800 series has to have at least a little background...

cheers dudes...you guys are a real help i really appreciate it. If things start to look bad then i might just have to take the plunge with a Point of View...but its scarey going for a company that it seems most have not heard of.

On a investment this mature, I suggest you seek some very reputable brands, such as Leadtek, eVGA, BFG ( despite them being a new company ) and Albatron. Some brands to only consider when the rest are all gone and you are desperate, Gainward, PNY, XFX, the rest.

i though xfx were reputable? guess i was wrong...i would ideally like a BFG of something....are Leadtek really good then? I mean i have leadtek winfast TV card and have zero complaints...

for the most part all of the initial 6800GT and 6800U cards are the same reference design, its really which companys support and warranty you like best.

gonna have to see what happens. I need to ship my 9800XT on monday. I might have to go a couple of days with out a card and see what shows up in stock during the week.

Most of those brands are good. I chose BFG due to the Lifetime Warranty :)

You got 210 for it??? Well done - was it water cooled?

I'm not looking to sell mine for more than £160 on ebay...

Anyway we simply don't know if the x800xt will beat the 6800u in half-life 2 in terms of fps and more importantly ImageQuality - if you're buying more for doom3 then definitely a 6800Ultra, if you have the money and you're a serious gamer get nothing less, imo.

It's all about the maximum half life 2 image quality - if 6800u wins then the x800xt can Rest in Pieces :p We'll have to see if ATI can win overall for me, they'll need to show their IQ superiority in half life 2...

yeah i hear ya....yeah mine went for £200 Buy it now...plus £10 for delivery, he chose to pay via paypal so 2% for admin charges took the total to a round £220.

I was thinking...is specific game performance the issue? Or should we be looking at it from a more general manner? ie dx9.0c and ogl (not sure what version we are on) performance?

Game performance = better FPS and IQ, then yes, that's what we're looking for, and only that.

I won't truely know which one to buy until Half Life 2, even after the excellent doom3 benchmarks, I'm still not convinced...

hrm...me neither...but then...realistically...we have seen bench marks for the 6800's in Far Cry which is a dx9.0 game. It looks to me like they have got the silicon right this time and got a very speedy card on their hands...ATI it appear have a just as speedy card out too...each one will perform very well in ANY current title...both perform well in Doom3, with nvidia taking a lead. Obviously last round there was no contest...it was ATI all the way..this time its so much closer from the outset that i think with more driver releases and what not the two cards will essentially be equals....perhaps with ATI taking an edge in d3d titles and nv taking an edge in ogl games...what do u reckon to that?

If ATI takes the lead in D3D I'm going with them because of half life 2. But I may have to get the card sooner.

Look at Far Cry - x800xt was way, way ahead of the 6800u (what I would call better) but I believe Nvidia has updated their drivers and now it's tied with x800xt in terms of FPS *BUT* it has added graphical effects (the 6800u) - but I'm still not 100% if this means better IQ than the x800xt...

Is there a review or something that directly compares the 6800U to the XT? If so can you link me...i am tired...been searching the net all night...

atm do you know what I want? I want ATI to equalize in doom3 and pull ahead in half life 2 OR, more realistically - for Nvidia to beat ATI in half life 2 as well, in terms of IQ and maybe fps so I know which one to get..

The comparison is here on HardOCP :p

doom3 = 6800 wins IQ.
FarCry at FIRST seemed to be x800xt easily however now I hear, from these forums, that 6800u is equal in farcary in terms of fps, BUT that it may have better IQ now even.

(notice how, on the tests hardocp did with Farcry x800xt is playable at 1600x1200, but nvidia only at a lower res.)

Wow im surprised you would put Gainward in the same crowd as pny and xfx as being a desperate last choice card

Is there any reason in particular why you say this? Just wondering cause there "golden sample" are notorious for being among the best cards in the industry, thats why I choose to go with their 6800GT golden sample card this time around.

yeah i know...its doing my nut in now!! I cant work it out one way or the other...have u seen the IQ pictures? Note that especially in far cry some of the floor tiles look much more "pixelated" (i put that in inverted comma's because its not actually pixelated as such) on the Nv cards than the x800s.

Well i need to ship my card to the buyer on monday...i can go for a few days without my PC being active...but realistically after that I need it to be up and running...and doom 3 is out in about 2 weeks so i would def want my PC up and running for that....

i dunno its all a bit too much to think about...i think it really is a case of not being able to go wrong isnt it...christ...this is all cause i didnt expect my 9800XT to sell so fast!! I was hoping for it to sell on monday or sometime next week!! Ah well...i might have to bite the bullet and get a PoV 6800Ultra.

My brain is turning into mush and I am seeing FPS graphs when i close my eyes!!!

You gotta resist the URGE!!!!!! At the very least do some research (aka google lol) and find out some info about PoV and more specially any reviews on their past and current products.

Syphon - I thought my 9800xt would be fine too, now look at it compared to the others!

In doom3, on your system/my system the 6800Ultra could be/should be the differnce bewteen Ultra Quality and high quality! If we get the x800xt no UQ for sure atm, unless ati pull something special out of their drivers.

With HL2 we just don't know yet :D

yeah i have been looking and a couple of sites have reviewed some bits and pieces made by this company in the past and they have a few awards and such...but the big sites like [H] dont seem to have anything...the only name that i saw that i recognised was Hexus.

It looks like 6800 might even pull ahead in HL2 ;)

But we'll still have to see.

Are you just saying that or are there some benchies and stuff floating around (not trying to be sarcy or anything, just curious).

right...I am going to stick it out for a few days (may be a week or so) to see what starts to show up and see if any more conclusive benchies start appearing.

Go for the Ultra...just make sure you have a good power supply with 2 free direct connections.

i have concerns with regards to IQ levels in D3D games...also there are no known brand Ultras available in the UK at the mo. I would like to get a recognised brand card.

If it's the same way as the US (and I assume it is) all the cards currently are reference design. Some companies are starting to put their own cooling on them however..

what about my d3d concerns? are they unfounded? I saw a review/article here at [H] where the nvidia cards made things look very different compared to ATI's...
