After asking some questions on this forum, I decided to order an x1950Pro from Newegg. I will let you guys know how things go once I get it. I ordered the Sapphire brand...256MB of RAM. It will be a good replacement for my x1600Pro that I have currently.

yep should have gone 512... also make sure your power supply is beefy enough for it.

My monitor only goes up to 1280x1024, so I'm not worried about widescreen at the moment.

you should have gone with the 512 if you want to run widescreen res

I have a 22" Westinghouse Widescreen LCD and a X1950XT, so far I've played BF2, Command & Conquer Generals : Zero Hour, World In Conflict, Doom 3 and Half-life2 / CS: Source, all at 1680x1050. I haven't gotten any slowdowns or slow fps, in fact in World In Conflict, I'm able to use the "High" settings for graphics and get no slow downs except during heavy napalm explosions ;)

Well, you are running an XT, which is a superior card, so ya, 256 on it would be fine.

Back to the OP
256 on standard resolution should be just fine then.

I did a little bit of research on all of this bewfore I bought the card. I found that 512MB of RAM wouldn't give me anything personally. I am very happy with my 19" 1280x0124 LCD at the moment. I also have a 17" LCD hooked up to the computer, and really don't have much room for anyting bigger, unless I bought a bigger desk, which I'm not going to do right now.

I just got it in the mail from UPS. I will install it soon and post my experiences with it here.

Got it installed and it works great. Even overclocked it with the ATI Overdrive application. Text looks better good in 2D mode as well.

hope you enjoy.mine runs great could not be happier cheers

agreed, I've not regretted mine at all. After r600 was released I thought it would be the best way to go and I have never looked back.

Based on the reviews I've seen of World in Conflict, a 8800GTX is barely pulling in 40fps at high detail at 1600x1200. So something looks fishy about your statement!

I ran the demo at 1440x900 maxed and it was smooth. Granted it was only 25-30fps, but in an RTS, it was perfectly fine.

The 512MB version really has no benefits since the card is too slow to run newer games at high resolutions with maxed textures and AA which is the purpose of more memory. In older games it would be fine, anything newer the speedier ram is more of a benefit then more, slower memory.

Should have posted the link to the review I was talking about.

I thought that the x1950 pro series was not overclockable ... since I have one (HIS Turbo3 edition) and overdrive does not show up at all in CCC.

Figured it out in ATITools ... works:)

I would like to know what the hell 256m or 512m has to do with widescreen or standard 4:3? if anything Wide screen below 1920x1200 has LESS pixels then the comparable standard rez

1600x1200 > 1680x1050?
1280x1024 > 1200x800 etc etc

so having 256 or 512 isn't going to change anything for wide screen or standard, but the 512 meg would help for gaming over 1280x1024 =p

and the 1950XT being a superior card has nothing to do with needing less memory either, as a frame will still be the same size as long as the card can push out that many pixels so infact the 256m would be a bottleneck for the 1950xt in higher rez
