I just ordered the parts to build my first Intel system. Every other PC I have built has been AMD, ranging from a K6-2 450 to a Athlon 64 3000+. I thought it might be fun to try the other side of the fence. Here is what I ordered from MWave.

Intel Pentium 4 530J
Asus P5RD1-V
MWave 1 GB PC3200 DDR
Codegen 6907 case with PSU

I have a hard drive and CD-RW laying around. Any opinions of this setup? :D

What kinda of Hard Drive you have laying around? YOu might want to pick up something nice like a High end 7200 RPM drive or a Raptor ;) if you got a lil money.

Edit: Deffinatly Instal SP2 also. It has an updated sceduler for the OS that Improves Hyperthreading Performance.

I have the Barracuda 7200.7 40 GB laying around. I do plan to get one of those Raptors after I recover from this purchase. SP2 is definite.

CamaroRacing,

I was going to ask you which PCIe video card you would be using on that Intel-based setup. That is, until I saw that you'll be using an Asus P5RD1-V motherboard, which uses ATi's new Radeon Express 200 chipset with integrated graphics.

Hehe, hyperthreading goodness. What kind of video you are going to purchase in the future? plain X800? X800XL is good and fast :)

Probably the plain X800. My plan is to make one system Intel and ATi, then my other AMD and nVidia.

The cheapest X800 I found is $242. I would recommend going for X800XL. You could pay extra $30-40. You will be more satisfied than X800. Did you know that it goes in this order. X800, X800 Pro and then X800XL.

I'd probably go with the XL for the extra 30 or 40 dollars then. I'm not too up on the ATi line, I've been more on the nVidia side for awhile.

Pay attention to hotdeals forum. X800XL sometimes go on sale for $250. And ATI also has coupons for 10% off of $300.

My parts should get here tomorrow. I also ordered a refurbished Gigabyte GeForce 6200 128 MB this morning to go along with it. I'll post results tomorrow when I get the system together.

As of now, I have it the P4 running at 3.3 Ghz. Thats the fastest I was able to get it to boot. I think my generic ram is holding me back.

I personally would not overclock an LGA775 socket chip unless you have really good cooling. My idle temps are/used to be 50-60 C.

Congrats Enjoy your new rig.

Go Mwave.. I love Mwave. except there willcall takes forever.... :D

My idle temp has been 48c all day, I got about the same when the chip was running at stock speed.
