Just put down a good chunk of cash for a new fileserver

#1) Areca 1261ML w/cables
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816151015R

#2) Chenbro 4U Rackmount RM41416T2-B
https://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?name=CA-41416TB

#3) 16x Maxtor Maxline III 500GB SATAII hard drives

Some of the drives ill be porting over from my current fileserver, 8 of them, then im getting a bunch of new ones. In the current layout, i have 4x 2 disk raid0's on nvraid, all 100% full. So im going to have to copy the data from those over to new drives, make an 8 disk array on the areca, copy the data back to the areca array, and then do online expansion with the remaining 8 drives.

If all else fails, ive got about 4tb in 250s and 300s I can borrow from a buddy for temporary backup.

This will be my first proper RAID5 (high end areca, proper hotswap, etc), so im hoping for a good experience.

Thoughts, suggestions, rants, raves, insults all welcomed.

Awesome man. I've got 40Gb's left on my 500GB I'll be picking up another when They hit $100 again. :)

Not sure yet, going to determine that once i get my data onto the new array

And what's this for? Personal use? If so, what kinda stuff are you storing that takes that much space?

Yep, personal use. I image all the optical media i buy (games, apps, etc) so i can archive the disks away and not have to worry about slow access times and or scratched disks. Then i just mount over the network with daemon.

Same thing for all music and dvds/HD-DVDs, they get ripped to digital form and stored on the HD for instant viewing from anywhere in the house. Ive been collecting for years, so a lot are XVID, but ive migrated to x264 now. All FLAC for the audio

Ah, all stuff i have already

#1) Opty 150 (will be upgraded later)
#2) 2gigs regged ECC
#3) Foxconn NFBIK8AA-8EKRS (love this board)
#4) Cheap nvidia 6600 for basic video
#5) Silverstone ST85F 850W

Then an IDE OS drive (just so i dont have to mess with drivers, etc) and a standard dvdrom for OS installs

Ill take pictures as it goes together, im excited about this case.

jbrukardt - that case looks the business.

Have you a proper rack to put it in?

remember to make a journal with pics of how it all goes.

Pretty much the *exact* same thing I'm looking to do, even down to the same RAID card. I just can't justify that case though... way too much $$ for me. The server will cost enough as it is (if I ever even save enough to buy it).

Woohoo, Areca is sitting on my doorstep at home. Must resist leaving work early to bask in its glow.

Case should be coming in on monday (not bad for a freight shipped 80 pound case), and I still am waiting on a deal on hard drives.

Hmm, curious

PCI bracket on the areca is slightly bent, and also, it seems to be a disabled 1280ml. Its got the extra ports too, but theyve got a "do not use" sticker across them. I can see some traces coming out of them, wonder if i can do some cross card bios flashing and get myself an extra 8 ports.

Nice setup. 6.36TB usable space with a R5+Hotspare.

Personally, I'm taking the easy route. I'm just replacing one of my 8x320GB R5 arrays with 8x1TB ($2100 from ZZF), yielding 6.36TB. It might be worth reconsidering the 500GB($0.20/GB @ $100) drives in favor of 750GB($0.21/GB @ $158) or 1TB($0.263/GB @ $236)

RAID6 FTW, and BTW jbrukardt is a copycat :p I've had that case for awhile and 16x500 sitting in my closet waiting for funds to buy a ARC-1160ML2. It's not the same case PS-Rage is using, this is the 16 drive version, he's using the 24 drive one.

Thats one sexy card!

Congrats!

Argh, the Areca wont work on any of the motherboards I have in the house. I get an infinite "waiting for firmware to initialize" message. This is a known message from incompatible motherboards. Ugh, troubleshooting commencing
