So I'm builing grandma an email box. I know I could have gone with cheaper parts, but I wanted this to fairly upgradeable.

Celeron D 330J Prescott 533 LGA 775 --------------- $88.99
GeIL Ultra 512MB (2 x 256MB) DDR 400 ------------ $42.81
ABIT AS8-V (LGA 775) 865PE --------------------------- $86.00
WD Caviar SE 7200 SATA150 Hard Drive ----------- $58.00 * - edit: 80GB
Lite On 32x CD-RW used ------------------------------------ free
GF4 MX 420 used (out of a Dell) -------------------------- free
ASPIRE X-Dreamer Case 350W Power Supply --- $48.00
Windows XP HOME Edition SP2 ------------------------ $91.95

$415.75 + shipping (from newegg)

I'll update in 2 days when the parts come in and I assemble the system with some benches. And OC'ing results.

That's cool...I'd say the RAM is too much for simple email, but with todays virus protection and tons of programs running behind the scenes, it's probably good....how big is the hard drive? I don't think you mentioned that. The celeron D is perfect for that setup, but what's up with overclocking? Seriously, that doesn't even need to be overclocked whatsoever! I'd just set it up and let it be. :)

Looks good, though I'd choose a sempron over a celeron every time. Even when its budget. Much better performance for cheaper most of the time.

Also, 512 is the min you should even consider. Today's programs are such system whores its not funny.

Ehh, true, but I ran windows xp sp2, NAV, msantispy, etc etc etc and also windowblinds and bootskins and cursor xp with 256mb RAM and it ran hitch-less...but I upgraded to 1gb just for the hell of it...and because photoshop took forever to load...but for something that's just surfing the 'net and checking email...512 would be "email enthusiast" :p

hell...grandma's box is better than my current sigged box! :(

well, i DO have a lot of HD space kicking around. but I got a mobile 2400+ 35w with an Alpha hsf on its way from a trade. then i'll go cheap and oc the sucker hard.

cheers on her boxen. in 2010 when you find an r520 holding up a short leg on a bum's coffee table you can swap it in :)

Not trying to hijack no thread, but i have to ask please post something on how well that 330 celeron runs cause im getting one too. Just recently my p4 fell off my hsf while i was doing some case swapping, and it took out about 10 of the pins  i only have $100 so the 330 looked to be the best choice.
So please anything on how it runs would be appreciated, cause im not getting mine till next friday

locutus, I'm running Celeron Ds in both my machines due to budget constraints. The performance is surprisingly solid, very comparable to my Athlon XP 2700+ that I sold a while back. The first box in my sig is my main box and it is pretty satisfying to use, playing WoW (30-65fps), Max Payne 2 (well over 100fps) and NOLF2 (well over 100fps) all at 1280x1024 with most sliders set to high and play very smooth. The second box in the sig in for a couple things, it is my wife's main PC and.... ahem ... media enconding and does a great job as well. I had originally planned to swap my Celeron D for a PIV ASAP, but honestly I don't feel a lot of pressure to do it right away. I'm sure I will eventually but it is a far better processor than the old Celeries.

I wanted the box to be "future proof" thats why I went with 512Mb of ram... and dual channel was cheaper than getting a similar single stick of 512.

I'm going to push the OC, just to see what it will do. Then I afterwards I'll put it down to a more conservative OC. In case dust builds up in the system etc. Ex: Hopefully, it will hit like 3.4Ghz, then I'll probably back it down to like 3Ghz.

Also, just in case the system out lasts granny, I wanted it to be fairly upgradeable. (775 pin)

People don't give Celeron D's enough credit. Now that they've moved from 128Kb cache to 256Kb, the performance is much more respectable.

Oh yeah and I priced going with a Sempron, and it really wasn't any cheaper. At least not when I was comparing the 478pin Celeron D for $70.

This set up I could drop a 660 in later on and have 64-bit and a lot more power. (not that it will every happen, but could if they got very cheap - much later)

Well thank you for that, now im more confident buying a celeron
And chrisf6969 hope your not angry at me, cause i never would hijack a thread

So true, the new Celeron Ds really do go toe to toe with Northwood PIVs at the same clock in most task, and at a really decent price. The longer pipeline and extra cache have really paid off and while the ]-[ in me wants a PIV right now, I know I can live without it for a few more weeks and not really hurt for performance.

You didn't hijack!! You're talking about the same relevant subject. (celerons)

BASTARDS!! I just checked my order status. I ordered it yesterday afternoon and paid for 2-day shipping so I would get it by Friday, so I could assemble it over the weekend. BUT it took too long for credit card, step 1-3, so its not going to ship until today and get it Monday :(

Oh well, so I won't have results until Monday night or Tues now!!

Do they not do exrpess processing or w/e, cause i did that one time my verification took only a day to verify and ship

Well.....

#1 - I didn't pay the $2.99 rush fee, I thought there would have been enough time. (since I put the initial order in the early afternoon, and Cali is 2 hours earlier than me) - plus if you're paying for 2-day, next-day, etc, you would think they automatically should try to rush your order.

# 2 - I put the wrong expiration date in by accident, so I got an email a few hours later saying credit card failed!!! And had to go fix the mistake, for it to go through! (so thats the main problem)

edit: got tracking #'s, all parts will be in on Monday. And my new 19" Dell E193FP will be in tomorrow. (I'm keeping it and giving granny the old 17" CRT )

Well then by the time you get your celeron D i will be ordering mine, my P2 333 is killing me so bad. Luckily linux isnt a processor owner

I agree with some of the reviewers. The Celeron D series of CPUs is definitely underrated. With the right components and the right chipset, a system based on that series of CPUs will give most of its competitors a run for its money. The Celeron D's not-so-good reputation comes from the fact that almost all pre-built systems based on that series of CPUs are crippled with second-class components and non-upgradable integrated graphics.

All to true, cause today i went in to check out a new pc shop opened up not so far from my house, told them i was looking for a celeron D on the inside i bet they were laughing. The guy was like "no we dont stock those because of there poor performance", after that i left and decided never to go back. I dont personally own a celeron D yet, but with all the great input here im betting they are fairly good

They are more than fairly good, IMO, and lots others as well...I own one and if there is a performance difference (which there probably is bench-wise) then it's really not noticeable at all...the celeron D is great for it's price and what it's capable of.

These little chips are a hell of a lot of fun to play with. You can probably up the FSB to 200 without much of a voltage increase, if any at all.

Well, I got the Celeron D and memory in today from the NJ warehouse. Which doesn't make sense b/c they're 3 hours later than the Cali warehouse. So how did they manage to ship my stuff the 1st day (weds), but the Cali didnt. :(

The other 2 boxes from Cali didn't ship until Thursday, so I won't be getting the case, mobo, HD, etc.. until Monday.

Had my celeron D 320 2.4ghz for a while now, been using it for visual basic and it runs well. temps with an 80F room on the stock cooler: 34C cpu, 31C case

Maybe I'm way out of the loop when it comes to budget processors but I'd probably just throw together an Athlon XP system with onboard everything.

Could be a powerful little box, but dead end road.

My choices on this system were based on.
1 budget (celeron)
2 upgradeability (775 pin socket)
3 stability (intel mobo - no driver changes to worry about like 3-in-1's etc)
4 performance (decent DC ram & Abit mobo to tweak/OC a little bit )

775 socket so could conceivable be upgraded to 3.8Ghz 570, or 660 (with 64-bit), etc...
AGP slot b/c I figured if I wanted to upgrade the video, there will be PLENTY of decent to high end cards for sale as people migrate over to PCIe. (down the road) Plus I had a free GF4mx420 AGP to put in there

Painted my old CD-RW and 7-in-1 card reader black yesterday to match the case, so Monday I'll just slap everything together.

Well, everyone has their preferences, but I'll have to agree with what you're doing because everything in your case just seems to fall together nicely, and you have good reasons for doing and choosing what you are, so, all in all, good choices, and smart too. :)

Well, I said I could wait, but I went from my Leadk GeForce 6600 and was still under the return period so I bumped up to the 6600GT and honestly, I'm pretty seriously CPU bound across the board. I got a decent deal on a PIV 530J from work and I suspect this will unlock the real potential of the GT.

Just installed Win XP, and got it running at 3.2Ghz at default voltage.

I haven't tried higher and I don't think I will. I kinda like
running at 160FSB with 4:5 ratio... puts the ram right at spec (DDR400)
and the processor is a nice round 3.2Ghz.

Running Prime95 to test for stability, its maxing around 58-60C.

computer.gif

@ 160FSB - 5:4 ratio - 2-3-3-7 - (DDR400)

Sisoft CPU: 8641/3948
Sisoft MEM: 3959/3951

maybe PC Pitstop's little benchmark, next.

No point in 3dMark as its got an GF4 mx420.

I cranked it up to 3.4Ghz (next "official sounding" speed bump) last night just to see, and it was idling in the 50C's and load around 63C. Though with good cooling (instead of stock HSF and shabby case cooling) it would probably do a lot more. If this was a PC I was going to keep in my house, where I would dust it out regularly, etc.. I'd probably keep it at 3.4Ghz. But since its going to mother-in-law, and it could get dusty, etc.. I'll leave it at the more conservative and cooler 3.2Ghz.

I put it back down to 3.2Ghz where it idles in the 40C's range, and maxes out at 62C after hours of Prime95.

I just like nice round OC's 3.0, 3.2, 3.4, 3.6, etc... I back it down to the closest stable round #.

So when someone asks... you don't have to say:
"Its a 3486.5 Mhz computer." etc. :)

And then they try comparing it to their 3.4, 3.2 Ghz, etc..

OC'ing your mother in laws comp, well thanks to your assistance her mad doom addiction can be satisfied

Pretty nice OCing with you celeron, try to crank it up to 3.4ghz or maybe 3.5ghz lolz.
I want to build a budget computer for my home network the rig i got now is a 3.2ghz as stated in my sig, going with another p4 630 or 640 is just too much, should i go with a celeron or AMD XP?..... and i am sorry if i had hijack this thread.

Depends on if you have any spare parts, budget, upgradeability desired, etc..

One of the cheapest ways to go is a 478pin Celeron D 315 and a cheap mobo. (uses DDR and AGP = cheaper)

Ex: (new prices from NewEgg)
Celeron D 315 = $71
Abit IS-10 = $74 (i865g) or Abit IS-7 V2 $59 (i848)
Geil Ultra 2x256 3200 2.5-4-4-8 = $43
etc...

find a used AGP card cheap since people will be migrating to PCIe
