Okay I have my Own opinion as far as parts in mind, but I wanted to see what you guys thought. Im not asking you to do any work for me..just suggestions. keep in mind this computer will only be running everquest 2...which is a VERY VERY poorly programed game, to give you some background I have a dual core 2.66 with 3gig of 800mhz ram, and a 2600xt OC'd (how sweet is that for a game that cameout when the geforce ti4600 was top dog lol 2004'ish)...and I can only run balanced or less settings in group..and when I raid (many more characters to render on screen) I have to almost run JUNK mode.(everything off)

okay, His current setup:

Asus p5b MB w\pentium D 3.0ghz
3gig gskill 800mhz ram
1600xt 512

we're going to do a CPU, Ram and Video card upgrade...he's willing to spend 400-500$

Now I know his computer supports core 2 duo's, im pretty sure...I havent looked into quad cores...but everquest 2 has no support for quad cores anyhow. SO please...any suggestions, let me know. thank you in advanced.

One thing to know is shadows are an issue in EQ2. They are not offloaded to the GPU...the cpu handles them.

My advice is to tone down shadows a lot. You will see a massive difference.

I do beleive now you're able to assign wiether or not you want the GPU or CPU to handle the shadows...I played with all those settings and it didnt make a lick of difference. but I didnt go into much depth on it...either way a 1600xt and a 3.0 pentium d arnt cutting it anyways :) he's due for a much needed upgrade. and he runs extreme mode...which there is extreme performance, very high Perf. high perf. and balanced(which is the first setting shadows are used on I beleive.) so thats not an issue for him..but thank you for the suggestion :)

If you wanted a quad, you could get a Q6600 off the FS/FT for around $125 and still have enough $$ for a 4890 or 5850.

I dont think eq2 supports quad cores..and its dual core support is mediocre at best...but I will pitch him the idea...and we're sure the p5b supports the q6600? Also if he replaces ram to match fsb...instead of sticking with the 800mhz...how much of a performance gain are we talking? ty.

Flash to latest bios, good to go!!

Flash to latest bios, good to go!!

he hates the whole flash the bios thing..cuz originally he has a p5 mobo...and we couldn't run the pentium D without a bios flash, well the flash caused ALL sorts of problems. and we ended up having to buy a p5b and newegg would not RMA the p5....so will he have to flash the bios if we go with a core 2 duo? we were thinking the 2.83ghz duo e8XXX LMK and ty....and we all agree a 4850 would be a great jump from a 1600xt :)
