just got setup / quick question

I just setup my first box for folding and just wanted to run something by you fellas because I wasn't sure if it was normal or not.

I installed and configured the SMP2 64bit client on a 4way dual core box so there are 8 cores. Its running win 2k8 r2 and has 16gb of memory

I'm using the following command line

fah.exe -bigadv -smp -verbosity 9

I check the task manager and yeap that process seems to be using all 8 cores (they're maxed 100% cpu)

I just learned about fmh.net and installed it and was a little shocked my PPD was so low. I kinda expected a bit more out of a 4 way box - I'm just in the 3200 range. Does that output seem correct? Or maybe is it because the client hasn't been running long and these values change after WU's are complete?
 
dont need the bigadv but it wont hurt anything. bigadv is for linux or using with a vertual machine in windows.
 
First, Welcome to the horde!

If you wouldn't mind posting your log file, that would help a bunch. Also What CPUs do you have in the mobo. The generation and the speed makes a HUGE difference.

Also, is the system have other uses or is it just FAH? if the system is doing other things while it crunching, that will slow down the client, but science is still getting done.
 
Box is a Dell Poweredge 6850 with 4 - Xeon 3.66ghz CPUS. At this moment it does nothing but crunch for folding.

Well first off you are running on an older architechture so you wont see the same kind of #'s that people with newer dual Quads will.

Also you should add a passkey, and then after 10 completed WU you will qualify for the bonus points.
 
Ok just wondering if it was in the ballpark or if I had heightened expectations. I do have a passkey setup so I should start seeing the bonus in a day or so.
 
I am running a server with similar architecture xeons, dual processor 3.6GHz, single core with HT. I get around 1200PPD with it doing A3 units (Win Server 2003). Your server has 4x the number of cores so you might could get around 4800 PPD if it scaled exactly which I'm guessing it probably wont. So, 3200 ish doesn't sound too far off. The Xeons you are using appear to be roughly equivalent to a Pentium D, which is based of the older P4 architecture.

Once you have the passkey set and entered into your folding client, it will need to complete 10 A3 work units under that passkey before you start raking in the bonus points. Until then, your ppd totals will be very disappointing. Since you have 8 physical cores, you might even be able to give -bigadv a try if your current system is doing well enough on A3 WU's. For that, you'll need to run Linux either natively, or within a virtual machine like many of us do.

Since you mentioned the linux vm here's a question for you - since this box although all the cores display 100% doesnt seem laggy whatsoever

would it benefit to run multiple linux vms / clients vs just the one windows one im using now (on this box)? will the total output be any different for PPD?
 
No the bonus is based on speed the faster you do them the more points you get. bigadv in a vm pays more points if the machine has the power. im thinking you should stay with smp.
