Ok i just picked up these lovely Beyer Dt-770 PRo. They dont go very loud from what im noticing. My question is do I need a headphone amp for these? If so which one and can the budget be $150 and under??

If they don't very loud, that's a pretty good sign you need a headphone amp. If you bought it normally, it's the 250 ohm version, the 32 ohm and 600 ohm versions are only available through Beyerdynamic directly.

It is the 250 ohm I am almost certain.

You need an amp. PM Mister X here if he has any Mini3s built yet. They are the best amp for the $$ going.

The 80 ohms needs an amp. All of the 770s benefit from it. The power from the x-fi is PATHETIC especially if you want good, controlled bass.

Mister X Mini3

If Head-Fi was up I could suggest other used amps FS but the Mini3 costs less than your headphones and will really improve the hell out of those cannons.

Improve everything and let you know that the X-Fi sounds kind of crappy lol.

Do not go beyond this. Headphones and speaker stereo is a great hobby but boy does it get expensive.

Is it an improvement in sound quality and volume?

HELL yes it is. Probably a night/day difference really. The X-Fi headphone "amp" and a Beyer or AKG headphone is like a Tercel engine trying to push a hummer around.

So lets say i get the Mister X mini 3 amp, am I done now??? Or should I get a better sound card. I really like these Beyers even though im thinkin maybe I should have went with some sennheiser hd 555. I use these headphones for gaming and music mainly. Also should I wait for burn in before I really make a decision?? And how long will burn in take??

My advice is to just quit with the amp. For gaming the 770s have the most bass of all headphones. If the sound does not work for you, write down what you do not like about them. If the bass is too much and you can't hear footsteps or placing threats is difficult then you can get some AKG 601s or 701s or perhaps just try the Koss SB-40s for $30 and see if you are good with that for gaming as I am.

I use speakers for music and games when the wife is either being nice or gone. :)

In other words, it gets really complicated really fast so keep it simple. If you get the amp then you have an amp which can drive any headphone with only one or two really rare exceptions. That way, you can sell the 770s or trade them and try a different pair of headphones until you find the ones right for you.

Hmm...my 80ohm DT-770s seem seem to work just find coming straight from my X-Fi or Zen Sleek. I do use an amp for better quality sound, but I still could drive them directly from either source if needed.

Just find? That is not good enough lol.

Maybe he just doesn't dig the sound as is and the amp will give it that extra bit. Who knows? Not like the mini 3 is a bad investment lol.

OMG A TYPO!

I'm not arguing that he shouldn't get an amp as I said I use one too, but I know I'm not the only one that says the 80ohm version doesn't need an amp to drive them. I've seen it mentioned multiple times on Head-Fi.

lol just a stupid joke sorry

ok let me roll out the credentials

I have had just in Beyers alone a:
770/80 and 770/250, 880 250 ohm, 880 600ohm, 880 150 ohm with cardas recable, Darth Beyer v1 w/ blacksilver, Darth v2 w/ blackgold, Darth V3 Open w/ blackmax.

The reason for this?

I agree it does not NEED an amp but it WANTS one lol.

The bass just isn't nearly as good and controlled/defined with an X-Fi and the mini3 or the XP portable Marshall made me gave me basshead nirvana with the Darths.

i have sennheiser hd 525's 150 ohms and my x-fi drives them great. very deep bass and nice volume- i've tried 2 amps and it only changes it a small amount. 80 ohm cans should be no problem. play with your settings (equalizer, bass boost and redirect, bass and treble settings under the tray icon, etc) b4 u go the amp route.
an x-fi is a 2v source and should drive those cans well
'

Yeah i was just lookin at my options right now. I do love the cans. Im prolly goin hard of hearing at the ripe age of 22 from the pair a rockford p3 12"s in my car pushin 2k watts. So right now to get my hearing back on par i took my subs out. Yeah im gonna play with the setting a bit. I do hear a little distortion at high volumes sometimes but nothin major. They still arent broken in and wont be for some time.

I don't have an amp for my 770/80's but when I had them hooked to the soundcard they were not loud at all, but that has been improved 10x over by plugging them into the headphone jack on my Klipsch Promedia 2.1's. I definitely notice a difference, and now my X-Fi front panel is useless to me.

The LDII++ is a GREAT amp.

That is b/c that front panel IS useless for driving headphones lol.

The LD 2 is a great little amp if you want to try tubes.

I've looked at the LDII++ for a tube amp, but what would be a recommendation for a solid-state? One of Mister X's? Was thinking about one of his or spending a bit more and getting a Corda Arietta.

I go through a HK AVR-146 now and it can get plenty loud. But I'm still curious about sonic differences. :D

Either one of Mister X's offerings or a Gilmore Lite for the round $200 price range.

Mister X Mini3 is the best amp for the $$ period. It is around $100ish depending on what you want.

yeah im gonna get the mister x mini 3 when i can . I got a few other computer parts to buy first not many but some.

can always mod the x-fi....see if you can do a bundle deal with mr.x (dunno if he still mods cards though)

Break them in some !!!

3-4 weeks back I bought a slightly used set of 80Ohm 770s. These things were horribly dissapointing when new. Drive em hard, three days or so, you'll notice the bass will start to balance out a bit, you'll get a lot more bass extension and start really enjoying them!

I'm using a Mister-XP amp, It's nice, but I don't think it's a great match for these. I only get a small usable boost in volume, after that, lotsa distorion and clipping, not sure what the problem is here, maybe I'm jus going deaf' :D. I did buy the amp used, so who knows, maybe it's been altered.

Im using 770pro/250 thru a stereosystem from Aiwa, connected to my xtreme music. the sound is much better than directly thru my xtreme music or my logitechs, mainly due to some EQ tweaking on the amp. Just a hint that if you have some sort of stereo around somewhere you can have it act as an amp aswell

Yeah I use my old Sony ES1000 Pre-amp's headphone amp for my Koss SB-40s and the sound is certainly better than the X-Fi.

The X-Fi can be modded yes. It varies but the improvement is pretty dramatic from what I have read. If I did not already have a $500 Dac I would have mine done too.

hmm i have the same headphone as you. The DT770 pro 80. Bought it like a year ago and asked Marshal aka Mister X to build me an amp that synergizes well with it and this is the result. A amp is not a must have but investing in one for ur music pleasure or general usage would greatly improve the quality, volume and sound overall.
