I got my cable connection yesterday and already I have a problem. I downloaded spysweeper and it found 2,451 traces....i cleared it all out and got zone alarm as my firewall because pop ups started coming out of no where and casino software started popping up on my desktop without even asking if i wanted it or not...so i re-booted and now everything is fine but now my toolbar....system tray and start button are like all frozen...the whole bottom tray....I cant acces my start menu by pressing control either...when i open a window it doesnt even go to the tray when i minimize so i cannot acces it unless i control alt delete just to erase it...somebody hopefully can help me...i havent run a virus scan yet so that might be the issue..thank you for your time!

that would seem logical but wouldnt that take everything off my computer friend? Thank you.

Just go back to right before you got cable and do your scan. You shouldn't lose anything that was already installed at that point.

no it won't erase everything...provided you are running xp or i believe 2k (dunno, never really was a 2k fan) they have a system restore utility which rolls back registry and driver changes since the last snapshot that was taken (windows does this automatically). Also you should try out adaware from lavasoft, it's never broken my box before.

okay now grant it i wasnt in safe mode when i did this because i do not know which button to hit in dos before it loads up....but i did a system restore to yesterday but no files were erased and everything was the same plus i still have the problem...so what should i do now....again thanks for the patience.

Hit f8 while the computer is booting to go into safe mode. do safe mode with networking. think adaware will work in safe mode. also run a virus scan man. A fresh install may not be a bad ideaeither.

The system restore does not mess with files on the hard drive (desktop icons, downloads, other files) -- just registry and drivers. So if you system restore to a month ago, it will be before anything changed the registry entries for the start bar, etc etc etc. If you can restore to "yesterday" then obviously windows is setting restore points for you automatically, so go to one from before the problems started.

fuck that restore shit, it never even works anyway

just reinstall fucking windows, and save yourself the trouble. it will work alot better, and your computer will run faster, since, obviously, you havent done it in a while, if ever.

ok thanks for the input shadow but that was a real crappy post! I'm not a illiterate person when it comes to cpu's...just networking...I just had xp pro re-installed 3 months ago.....so please you dont have to post with obscenities....as to the other posts thank you very much....I will try the safe mode and see if i can figure whats going on...also i will get a virus scanner and scan my cpu for viruses...thanks!

That would be all fine and dandy for a while, but it sounds like he's got a more serious ad-ware/spy-ware/virus problem and it'll most likely come back and bite him in the butt if he doesn't know how to get rid of it and prevent it for the future .

I would suggest going to www.download.com (or www.lavasoftusa.com) and download "Ad-Aware 6.0 Personal." Install it, and make sure you do the updates for it. Then restart your machine (hitting F8 during boot up) and load into Safe Mode. From safe mode, run a full Ad-Aware scan as well as a full virus scan. Then clear ALL temp files & folders as well as cache.

Restart the machine after removing all the files the scans found, and i would suggest installing the Google Toolbar (toolbar.google.com). It's an awesome little utility, and protects you from pop-ups quite well.

That should take care of most issues for you. If anything persists after that, you might possibly have a "hijacking" type of adware which you'll possibly have to do other thigns to fix. Let us know how it goes for you :D

Save yourself the trouble? It takes what, 3 minutes to run system restore? I'd like to see you reinstall windows off of the CD in 3 minutes

I've always liked Norton Antivirus. Try to get a copy of 2003 if you can, probably easily find it for free after rebate or something. The 2004 version is good too, but it has a few bugs in it. It'll detect a lot of the Adware crap, but it won't delete the damn things. You have to go through one by one and search for the files and delete them manually (Get's sort of annoying when i'm working on client's machines with over 100 traces of adware :( ) The company i work for puts Norton on everything, we love it and recomend it to all our customers.

i hate norton!lol....but onb a serious note i had a virus...the netskyd virus and i downloaded a special remover proggy from avg's homepage and now im all good thanks everyone!
