A friend of mine gave this to me after he got a new computer. The system had everything except an HDD. 3gig northwood (30 capper, those are supposed to OC nicely in an Abit or Asus board right? Though, I think M0 is the good stepping. This is D1) and a DVD-RW, the RAM thats featured in the cpuz, and a power supply that I replaced.

So, I threw in a WD4000YR (the 400gig, 16mb cache "RAID edition 2" drive from western digital that has a 5 year warranty.) This is my first hyperthreaded system that I've personally owned. Time to see what the hype is about (I never noticed any extra smoothness when working on customers' hyperthreaded systems, but whatever.) Either way, this will be great for serving ripped movies for my home network, and since it has an 865 chipset, it would be easy to find linux drivers for it. Only downside is that it's Gateway. But it still runs, and that's what counts.
 
personally, hyperthreading is worse than shit compared to dual core (not bashing on intel guys)
i've been running on my x2 for a lil more than 6 months and i decided to boot up the old prescott...lemme tell u, at 2.8ghz w/ 1gb of ram, taht thing is like a snail compared to this :mad: :mad: :mad:
took ages to load, took ages to rotate between games/desktop (alt-tab) and it was pretty laggy when it came to multitasking...
then again, it is 2 cores vs. 1, so i cant say much more :p
 
looks really cool... heck, and it was almost free :D
i have an almost identical system at home and it is still put to good use.

one question: IIRC i once read that the WD4000YR needed a full-blown add-in RAID controller to work 'correctly' (some sort of error correction needed to be supported AFAIK) - i.e. it could give you corruption issues when hooked up to a normal on-board controller. is there something to that at all or is my memory playing tricks on me?

Just looked for the review I was referring to earlier and found it here:

"standard desktop system" = no on-board RAID controller? i take it the 865's RAID controller is just fine for that then... which is a bugger because when i read it for the first time it was sufficient to scare me away from the drive and get a maxline III instead :p ... BUGGER!

I loved my northwood, 2.4 however the 3.0 was much better, (higher multiplier, easier to overclock :D ) I now wished I never got rid of my 2.4 northwood. The northwood was better than my 3000+ winchester at 2.5 at alot of things (my northwood was at 3.3 max limitation of the board).

congratulations, for one of the best netburst processor that existed.

Really ?
I built an Intel computer for my dad 2 christmases ago and that system booted up in under 6 seconds and within 1 second you were using windows. Intel P4 chip, 1gb ram Intel motherboard. it was amazing how fast that system could go from power on to using it at the desktop.

My friend has been running a WD4000YR for a while off of normal nVidia sata, single drive, and has had no issues. We'll see how it does! This board has ICH5, so hopefully that SATA is robust.

i was talking about a s478 at 2.8ghz, not an opty or x2 ;) heck, im running at 2.5ghz on my x2 and it will pretty much beat out taht old presscott in anything...but maybe the slow startup and lagginess could be from a really old windows install/bunch of start programs :rolleyes:
