just got a DVR, now thinking Linux HTPC

Just got a Motorola 3416 DVR from my cable company a few days ago. Wow! Can't believe I was watching tv without one of these days for all this time. Anyways, I want to archive my shows to my pc for later viewing/save space. I know there is a way to transfer video from other Motorola DVR models and I just assume it would be the same with this one. However, I was thinking about building an HTPC to automatically record my shows conveniently on the PC in a format I can watch on other devices.

What do you guys think about this set up?

I do not use linux as my primary os but I have messed around with it a few times. I figure this device is set up to be user friendly.

Don't care for linux. I run FreeBSD.
But I use XP Pro and SageTV for my PVR duties.
I also have 4-5 MCE machines recording various stuff.

It doesn't really matter anyways, this guy is just spamming the forum. He posted this exact same post over at HTPCnews and probably other places weeks ago and hasn't made another post.

The "other" Genmay as well.
 
A couple things: The LixSystems aren't bad at all, but the drawback is the limited space in the case. It's tough to get the half-height cards, especially if you want to upgrade from onboard video.

The second thing concerns how you'll copy from your existing DVR to the HTPC. If your DVR is anything like mine, which has composite outputs (the yellow, red, and white RCA jacks), you'll lose some picture quality doing the transfer.
