I just got a x1900xt and is it better to use ccc or ati tray tools? Is ati tray tools a replacement for the clunky ccc?
 
your preference really I suppose. I prefer the ATI Tray tools. faster, simpler, profile support, uses a single process as opposed to 3 (at least on my system there are 3 instances of CLI.EXE being loaded and constantly use process time despite nothing happening on the screen).
 
I also use Tray Tools...

On the ATI website, on the Catalyst driver page, scroll down a little bit until you see the selection for "Display Driver Only". Download and install the display driver, then install tray tools. That's what I did (just built this computer last week) and it's worked just fine for me.
 
i just installed the base driver. But after i reboot i still get a new hardware found message. Is this normal? Is it the WDM VIVO stuff that is doing this? Also do i run ati tray tools when i play games?

I also noticed that my monitor is supporting modes higher than 1600x1200. What is going on?
 
If you use the features of ATI Tray tools, like game profiles for performance/quality settings or automatic overclocking/fan speed adjustment...then yes...you run it while playing games. I have it running all the time since it doesn't use much memory and it's one less thing to worry about starting if you use the profiles.

The card is certainly capable of displaying higher resolutions than 1600x1200, it's possible that windows doesn't have a correct driver profile for your monitor and is thus allowing higher resolutions than what the monitor actually supports (which could cause damage). Check the specs on your monitor if you're planning on using a higher resolution.
 
i noticed that my requested 3d core speed is 621 and not 625. Same with the memory. Isn't suppose to be 725? Mine is 720.
 
CCC is more reliable than ATI Tray Tools from my experience. Also, ATi Tray Tools doesn't have the saturation (digital vibrance-like settings) slider either.
 
I was playing bf2 fine yesterday but today, the game froze then the screen went black. Then the game unfroze again and i was able to play again. But it froze and the same thing happened.

This card played bf2 with no issues yesterday fully overclocked to 697/1600. Also, the only thing i installed was ATI tool. Im using cat 6.3. Is this an issue caused by the overclock ?
 
could be the overclock. Does it play fine while not overclocked? Almost sounds like the GPU recover feature. I ran into that on my old 9600xt but it was caused by the overclock but cured with a better cooler.
 
yeah turns out that it is not stable at those speeds. Runs fine at stock. ATI overdrive is so deceiving. If it is not stable, it should not even overclock it to those speeds. I noticed that ATI overdrive did not overclock nicely today. It failed while i was overclocking the core again. I guess ill just stick with stock settings.
 
from my experience (and I've heard elsewhere)...don't enable ATI's Overdrive AND overclock the card with a 3rd party util at the same time. The 3rd party util will o/c the card to say, 690 and ATI's overdrive will attempt to o/c the card further since it sees that the card is within certain specified limits. On my 9600xt when I enabled OD, it would bump the clock speed 25Mhz-35Mhz if the temps were under a certain level. 25Mhz was a pointless overclock on that card since it oc'd 155mhz over stock.

Try disabling overdrive and using the 3rd party tool to o/c. See if it's stable when overclocked then.
 
afaik, the ccc process is always running in the background (cli.exe) so it's safe to close it while playing the game
 
this ati card is acting odd. After i played CS:S, i quit to desktop but the screen turned black and my pc rebooted. It was not a BSOD. Why the hell is this card acting up like this? I never had any problems like this when i had a Nvidia card.
 
now i just played some oblivion. After i quit to desktop, i saw bunch of green dots on my wallpaper. WTF! This card is definitely fubar. I guess time to go back to nvidia. My first powercolor x1900xtx acted up. So is this HIS x1900xt.

are those stock clock speeds or not? My 9600xt would do the exact same thing if you clocked it too high. I don't remember on my 9600xt whether the core speed or the mem speed resulted in the green dots on the desktop, but overclocking too high caused it.

It is entirely possible that you could have overclocked the card too high to begin with causing damage to the card. If the card worked fine out of the box before you overclocked it, and then started acting strange AFTER you overclocked it....then the culprit is most likely overclocking it.
 
yes it is at stock speeds. Wow ati cards must be shoddy if overclocking with software can damage them. I am rmaing this card and never going with ATI again.
 
ATI cards are not "shoddy". You can damage an Nvidia card just as easy by overclocking them too high. I've owned both NV and ATI cards over the past years, overclocked every single one of them to their max limits and even voltmodded most of them to get them higher. Each and every card had upgraded cooling to handle the extra load also.

Software is how you overclock any video card. whether it be with software in windows, or the bios software...it's just that...software. You're only overclocking via hardware if you physically change the timings/frequencies of the chips on the board itself.

I think that if you fried your card from overclocking then you overclocked wrong in the first place.
 
all i did was use the overdrive feature in CCC. I never damaged my nvidia cards when overclocking. I think that this ATI card came defective. Now i get to waste money on shipping this thing back.

So far, current gen hardware has really let me down. Nvidia sucks in performing well in games at high res. ATI performs better but the drivers are clunky and have given me 2 bad cards in a row. I guess i'll just quit pc gaming till conroe and geforce 8 is out
 
That's f'd up if all you did was use overdrive. granted..I've always hated that "feature"...but still.

what res are you playing at that the nvidia's aren't keeping up with?? I'm limited to 1280x1024 (LCD)...so anything better than my current x800xl should play just fine for a while.
 
at 1600x1200 my 7900 GT SLI could not handle bf2:special forces at all. All studdery gameplay. The single x1900xt handles it well with no studders. It's just that this card is fubar. I really don't want to order another one because im sure it is going to do the same thing. Im pretty sure it's not a driver issue because i ran DC cleaner pro in safemode

Wow jump to conclusions that all ATI cards are "fubar." Maybe you are having bad luck? I previously had an ATI card now I have an Nvidia, the ATI was better. :( If you overclock too high and don't increase voltage or increase voltage too high you can kill the card. Any chance you bought the card as "open box" from newegg? :p
 
btw...just have to add that I just orderd a x1800xt :D

been saving for a while and I refuse to spend more than $300 on a video card. I almost went with the 7900GT...but the seemingly unusually high failure rate people are reporting and the 512mb ram on the ATI card made me swing to ATI again.

I'll always use an nvidia on my media center pc's though...you just can't beat their customizable resolution features in the drivers!
 
the card was new. A HIS with a ICEQ cooler. This cooler is quite beefy so i expected it do let me overclock well.
