Just got a 9800pro having some issues

I just upgraded my Nvidia gf4mx to a radeon 9800pro

When I uninstalled the gf4mx, all I did was go to Add/remove Programs and removed the Nvidia software from there. I never uninstalled the driver from the System Properties.

This may be what's causing my problem.

After I restarted I installed the catalyst 4.10 drivers. In my system properties, under Display Adapters, it says I have a Radeon 9800 Pro AND a Radeon 9800 Pro - Secondary. (this might just be for dual monitors and not an issue)

I uninstalled the Radeon drivers and reinstalled them and that did not fix the problem.

In doom3, the game runs much faster than before, BUT i can see a lot of little red dots on the floorpanels and walls and stuff (not its not blood its obviously not ment to be there). In NFSU2 demo, it looks like someone went into MS paint and went crazy.

I THINK it's just a driver issue. This card is NOT brand new, and it MAY be artifacting but I haven't overclocked it.

Also the taskbar icons got changed to some random icons (thats not a big deal, but may help someone figure out my issue).

here are 2 screenshots of what happens when I run ATI tool and tell it to find artifacting. I am not sure if this is what its suppose to look like or not cause ive never used ATI tool before:

see in the second picture, all the white dots in the background. that's pretty much what I have in the background with doom3 except they're red.

P.S. I did run a driver cleaner, it removed about 8 nvidia files. Since then I have reinstalled the catalyst drivers and i still have issues.

Uninstall all drivers
Boot into safe-mode
Run drivercleaner (google for it)
Restart
Intsall ATI drivers
Restart

voilla

And you're supposed to have 2 devices listed in device manager. it just shows that the card has dual output.

How long has the system been up and running?

Also ATITool Artifact Scanner should look like this:

I just installed the catalyst 4.9 drivers (didnt help)

then I installed the catalyst 4.8 drivers and they made ATI tool look correct. I havent tried any games yet...

I would like to get 4.10 drivers working since I heard they provice a nice performance boost in games.

any suggestions?

thanks

should I try installing the omega 4.10 drivers to see if they work fine?

also, should I be worried that a I had issues before even tho it looks fine with the catalyst 4.8 drivers? do you think the card is ok?

thanks

it has been running for about 1.5hours why? the video card is used tho

FWIW - I had a ti4200 a while back that I oc'd the hell out of, it displayed artifacts after I did that. Even when I ran it down at stock speeds, it still did it. I'm sure I caused damage to it, so I eventually just RMA'd it.

Now using a 9800pro in one machine, and a 5950U in the other. I've looked at the latest gen ATI/Nvidia cards, but I'll wait for now.

Good luck with that card.

good point the person who had it before him might have used it and oc'ed it to hell. I'd say try reinstalling windows like I said and or RMA'ing

card's toast. If you're getting artifacts at stock it's a hardware issue (sorry.) Can you return it?

i reinstalled windows and just used the 4.10 catalysts. also, I put some new thermal grease and reattached the heatsink fan. those two things combined fixed my problem.

I am still having an issue in 3dmark05 in the nature test. it says D3DERR_OUTOFVIDEOMEMORY

it only does that the first time I run 3dmark05. when I run it again it works fine. i hope this isnt a big deal.

also, in 3dmark03, i can't run any of the sound tests. I have onboard sound on my biostar m7viw motherboard. i have the latest drivers but I think this soundcard is piece so it wont run the tests.

I had a very similar problem with my 9800 Pro, it was artifacting like a bitch, I reinstalled drivers and everything only to find out after opening my case that the fan was stuck. Works like a charm now that I got the fan working again..
