Well when i came home from school today i found a nice suprise on my door step. and it was my new card. I am so happy that i can finally get rid of the 5200 :( .. And get to use a brand new card i am downloading the drivers now :cool:
 
People are getting 6600's delivered on their doorstep?! Whoa!

But with everygood thing there is a bad.

So i was an idiot and just ready to start gaming on it and i forgot to hook up the supplemental power adapter.. So as soon as i noticed i turn it off right away to connect them. After i connected them i tried to turn it on and it didnt boot up..(i had the power supply off)then i turned it back on and hit teh power but the fan over the heat sink started turning then it stopped. So i un hooked the cables and it booted up fine. So i looked in the users guide and it says you need at least a 350watt PSU. I Have a 450. so what could be the problem?
Please please help me

Try to isolate the power lead to the card,
If possible run only the card on that rail.
Also
Get ye a digital meter (radio shack) cheep
and test those rails to see watts watt ;)
 
I think only the AGP versions need power, as my 6600GT PCI-e doesn't.

I have the 128mb version and it doesn't need the extra power from the PSU. :confused:

Me too! Why doesn't my card have the power connector!? My board is REV.A, I wonder if that is why.
 
Yeah i got it fixed. thats why i edited disregurad that :) but thanks anyways. if you were wondering it was a PNY fx5200 128

I wish my 6600GT PCI-e had a power connector. Personally, I'd like to issolate the power of my 6600GT's on my Dual Rail power supply. Currently they use the power from the PCI-e slots, which shares the same rail as the CPU.

By having the connectors, I'd feel more comfortable with going SLI and not exceeding the 18A current to the CPU rail, and having the 6600GT's on the second 18A rail.

Oh well. The solder positions exist, how difficult would it be to retro fit for PCI-e power?

The solder points are there, but is the circuitry and resistors and such?

Without looking at the boards, I can't say for certain, but I doubt that it will work. My card which has the connector crashed in games without the power connector. Using this logic, yours should crash without it, but since it works fine (as it should) it must be wired differently. I wouldn't try it.
 
I also have an Evga 6600GT 128Mb PCI-E 500/1000 and it doesn't have the external connector. I wonder what Evga did to reduce the cards power consumption, don't the GPUs use the same amount of power no matter what PCB and RAM is used?

It has to do with the power supplied by the slot. AGP needs the extra power that the PCI-e slot provides all by itself.
 
Think of the power adapter for the video card like the supplimental power for the P4 (and later AMD) CPUs, just gives them extra juice to work.

The 6600GT needs an external power, at least in AGP configuration. It works fine in 2D without the power connector, but running games with it is a no-no.

UnMinded, what did you do to fix the problem?
