This is my new computer that I just built. I'd like to know what you think of the case and the look.

In this pic you can see my orange LED fan and its pimp grill. You can also see some of my ghetto DIY tube cabling (yellow duct tape) and green neons. And don't worry, that monstrosity of a floppy drive cable in the foregrounds has been tube-ized and shoved back since the pic. However, the wires for the buttons and lights on the front of the case are still quite messy, looking for a way to clean those up. Lot of PSU cables are routed behind the motherboard tray to clean them up, but it's still not as clean as I would like.

This is my setup, where you can see my computer, as well as my iBook, my T616, iPod, Creature Speakers, etc.

Specs on this box aren't too impressive (built for less than $500, I had the CD burner pulled out of my K6-2 Compaq machine. That being said, it does run Battlefield 1942 quite well, which is about the only game I play.

1.6Ghz Duron @ 1.85GHz
256MB PC2100 (coming soon*: 512MB PC3200)
60GB Hitachi 7200RPM
15GB Western Digital 5400RPM
12x10x32 burner I had sitting around
Nvidia Geforce 4 MX 440 SE that i had sitting around (coming soon*: Nvidia Geforce 5600)

*coming soon = when I can afford it.

Thoughts?

i know your hard pressed for cash, but im sure you can pull something better than a 5600

everything else seems ok

crap, I meant to post this in cool cases. Hopefully one of the all-powerful mods will forgive me and move it there.

interesting that put a 1.6 duron in it when the 1700+ Tbred B's are 50 bucks. Other than that the extra ram will really help battlefield.

I got a very good deal on the chip, thinking of replacing it with a 3200+ in about a year's time.

Battlefield is doing a lot of swapping between the RAM and the HD (I have BF on the 7200RPM), so for the first few seconds of gameplay it lags a little because it has to load up the sounds into the RAM. After that it's just fine. I'm running it at low graphics detail right now... If I could get rid of the lag and run it at high graphics detail that would be great, although it'll probably set me back $200+

Retardedchicken, is the 5600 really that bad? My brother's box has a 5200, and it's fine for what he does (Battlefield, Halo, Enter the Matrix), so I figure a 5600 would meet my needs. The memory has priority, though, because there's a LOT of hd/Ram swapping going on in battlefield.

Re-prioritized my upgrades a bit based on what I heard from other people:
Within the next two months I want 512MB PC3200
Within the next six months I want a better graphics card. I thought a 5600 would be good enough, can I have some other opinions on this?
Within the next year, I want an Athlon XP 3200+. Hopefullly by then they will be cheaper.

when the case is used by everyone it stops being considered a "Cool Case" unless you do something to change it from the cookie cutter case look.

Getting 3200+ ram is pointless in your situation. The fsb on that duron is 133 Im geussing, pc3200 is @ 200. Get a 1gig of pc2100 and you will be alot happier. Also, instead of the GeforceFX5600, get a Radeon 9700PRO 128 (or comparable Radeon).

Case looks hot but I must say the internals job (wiring and whatnot) is pretty poor. I'd suggest some sleeving and alot better management of those ide cables or investing in some rounded ones.

I am going to unlock the extra cache at some point. The reason for wanting fast RAM is so that when I upgrade to my 3200+ or whatever they have at the time, I want to be able to keep my existing RAM rather than buy new stuff.

Thanks for the tips, I will look into the Radeon.

As far as rounded cables, I DIYed the flat ones with yellow duct tape, as you see. I realise that real ones would look and work a lot better... I guess throwing the case-front header cables into a tube isn't hard, but what if my new graphics card needs its own molex? Oh the horror.

i have that same mouse, i love it.
am i the only one to notice a piece of paper (i think thats what it is) being used as a mousepad?

LMAO Good eyes

Yeah, it's a piece of filler paper that I'm using as a mousepad. My mom got the mouse for free from work (Big blue.)

I have an ECS K7VTA3 8.0c (maxes out at 333FSB)

I heeded everyone's advice and did even more cable cleaning up this morning. I still don't know what I'll do if my new graphics card requires a separate molex.

Looks a lot cleaner than before IMO. I tried mounting the hard drives backwards, but the cables weren't long enough, so I'm going to look into some longer, rounded IDE cables soon.

I really like those cases....but I just think the fan grills need to be switched out....ESPECIALLY that front one

If you think about it, the best position for hard disks would be on its side with connectors pointing to right side of computer (back side of motherboard). This way cables are shortest, they are all in the back and hot air can just go up between disks or you can circulate fresh air coming from one side of computer and exiting by the other.

EDIT: that would need really modding your hard disk tray

*breaks out Dremel*

...yeah, I like the sound of it, but unfortunately I lack the tools to complete it.

/me has 10000RPM battey powered dremel.
/me wants 370000 RPM dremel

I have a 35000 RPM Dremel Digital...that I never use hardly. I used it to cut a window for my old Antec PC65 and mod fan grilles on my Coolermaster ATC mATX case.

Your lack of fundage for your gaming rig is pretty obvious considering you have Apple's Over-priced Laptop and Over priced MP3 Player.... but that's just me talking.

Radeon 9600XT is a nice card and doesn't require external power.

Ok, I hate you more because you have a family that ISN'T a bunch of cheap-asses. Well, except my mom, she helped me get my truck.

Nice looking, I recently got the same case. I'm probably going to cut off that horrid design in front of the window this week though, I really can't stand it.

Ha! My mom is a total cheap ass. The iPod and junk are from my dad... he's a little nicer in that respect.

I don't mind the thing on the window cause it lets me hide the dangly fan power cable.

EDIT: OOOhhh you mean the other thing. Neh, I don't mind it. I'll probably get rid of it eventually.
