I was browsing through Wikipedia, and came across something pretty interesting. It seems like an explanation for the naming of nVidia.

Not sure if this has been posted or not, but bear with me. :)

One of the Seven Deadly Sins is envy, which is defined by Wikipedia as follows:

Envy (jealousy) — Resentment of others for their possessions (Dante: "Love of one's own good perverted to a desire to deprive other men of theirs"). In the Latin lists of the Seven Deadly Sins, envy is referred to as invidia.

A couple things here made me draw the conclusion to the video card company.

1. Envy is referred to as invidia in Latin texts. Although the pronunciation is different (v is pronounced like w in Latin), it almost perfectly resembles the name of the company.

2. From a marketing standpoint, if you own an nVidia card, people will be "envious" or "jealous" of you.

3. Just as ATI's color is red, nVidia's color is green. People are said to be "green with envy."

4. Although this is just a coincidence of the times, the current GeForce series of cards are the 7 series, just as there are Seven Deadly Sins. (EDIT: As pointed out below, this one doesn't really make any sense, so just forget about it. ;) )

Just found this to be interesting, and figured I should post it. Hope you all found it somewhat interesting as well!

Jen-Hsun Huang is latin so this makes a lot of sense, almost TOO much sense.

that would be funny if nVidia never heard of invidia, and were like, "actually, that is pretty cool...that is why we names ourselves that..."

Coincidence. According to the company, Nvidia was derived from "in video".

In the 9x00 vs FX days, the definition of invidia was used as an insult against Nvidia as being a company green with envy at their competition!

To be 'envy' is not a good thing. :)
 
Yum...deadly sins....me like...definitely like it better than nvidia's own rationale "in video"....
 
By the way, invidia is pronounced with a V as well, as that's the word for envy in Italian. In Spanish, it's spelled envidia, so it's not that much of a mystery to relate Nvidia to envy.
