Hi all,

i just built:

E6600 (stock HSF)
Gigabyte DS3
7900GS

Damn, i thought i am gonna brake that cpu during the installation. But finally, it worked when i clicked power button :p. I don't know if this is suppose to be, but cpu fan randomly stops running and starts again after a couple seconds. Sometimes it starts making weird noise. How can i fix this? My idle temps: Core1: 34C, Core2: 38. Why are they different? Thanks!

The DS3 has "Smart fan Control"

When you first start up from complete cold it usually won't spin until the CPU temperature increases.

Desinged to make your PC more quiet. It can be a little dis-concerting if you never have seen this before.

You can turn it off in the bios, PC health area I think.

If you don't like that feature, turn it off so the fan runs 100% all the time!

I just finished my machine last night using a DS3 board. That happened to me last night and I nearly sh*t a brick lol, i quickly powered off the machine. But, yeah it's a feature.

I always keep it off just because its annoying to have the fan go off for awhile, then it has to catch up and kick on at higher rpm's to get the temp back down, for sensitive ears its much more annoying than a constant lower rpm.

I stopped using it because I thought the board read the temps wrong (too low) with older BIOS's. This meant the processor ran hotter than it needed to. But when I did use it, mine never sped up like that. But my Ninja has a very quiet 120MM fan anyway.

Gigabyte should have printed this Smartfan info. in large letters at the first page of their user's manual. I had this same occurance happen to me last week on two Core2 builds, using the 965P and 965G boards. On initial startup the 'G' would shutdown after about two second or so of selecting the power button. I knew there was not a short circuit of the m/b to case and proceeded to reseat the processor. It did the same thing again. I then flashed the F3 bios to F6 and it was good to go after I disabled the smartfan. I can only imagine how many of these m/b are being returned as defective. The P was not as problematic on initial start as I immediately flashed the F4 bios to F8 and disabled the smartfan. Both systems are 'rock' solid now,but it would have been nice of Gigabyte to mention it.

OK, i have new problems. When i click on "My computer" sometimes i get ~2sec delay, and the same thing happens when i go from one folder to another. I didn't have this problem with my old rig. I think it's HDD. A second core is always 3-4C is higher than the first one. Is this normal?

Seagate 320GB (SATAII)
Seagate 80GB (SATA)
Antec NeoHE 500W

They both are connected on the same PSU cable. Any ideas?

One core running a bit hotter than the other is not unusual.

The 2 sec delay can be a number of things unfortunately, Here is a few things I have found in the past with that type of issue.

1. A mapped drive issue
2. General networking issue as windows goes off polling everything.
3. A codec issue, IE thumbnail view
4 Corrupt movie or piccy and thumbnail view.
5 Larger folders can for some reason cause this IE 30 gig full of your game installs.

Maybe others can add to that list, definately nothing to do with your processor.

Oh and there is a good chance switching to "Classic Folders" fixes it.

I installed all the latest drivers. The problem is somewhere else. I've noticed that i do have a delay with only 320GB drive.

Maybe you're on to something. I should have saved the link but MS-KB have a work around for Mapped Drive issue (after Hot Fixes). I did go back to using Classic Folder on the advice of a Modder I know and trust. Good post:) Then maybe we've gotten to use to things like the way MS-XP mounts and unmounts Drives, maybe it is not as seemless as we think?

Performance can be changed thought.

thanks for that, this is definitely one of those issues that will never be fully solved.

Don't worry though Vista will save us all
