I have an HP netbook, with no cd / dvd player

just bought win 7, downloaded it from the Microsoft Website to the hard drive of my HP netbook

then, I used a microsoft program to make a usb....formatted it to ntfs before I loaded the win 7 on the usb

one last thing....

I have win 7 ultimate test os on the system now, but it expired, and shuts down every 2 hours.

so....

I want to save the data I have on the hp system.....pics, music, vids, docs and stuff.

I want to load the new os to the hp from the usb

do I have to do anything to the usb to make it bootable, or did the microsoft program do that>?

do I have to do anything to save the data, or will that happen automatically?

thanks

The Microsoft program made it bootable but you can still try it and see if it boots. Once it gets to the start screen just restart the computer, nothing will be installed.

Just back up the data to the USB drive you are installing from. You can have other stuff on the drive besides the OS.

Assuming the flash drive is big enough to hold the data and the OS install files, that's the way I'd go.

will give it a shot

oh, is all my data located in windows.old?

I was told that was the case...then I could just copy that file

allen

I meant I'd copy the data off BEFORE starting the install. This way it is safe and sound before you start.
