My first MBP 13" will be here on Tuesday and I'd like to go ahead and increase my memory from 2gb to 4gb. Do I need 2x2gb to replace what's already in there or just buy one 2gb stick? What do you recommend? Links are appreciated.

Thanks!

Make sure that it is compatible with the new MBPs. I can't find it, but I read an article that said memory has to use a certain chip in order to work properly. Don't know if this is true or if someone is trying to sell their more expensive memory.

its ddr3 not a certain chip or anything some pretentious mac fanboy is blowing shit out of his mouth saying it needs certain chip. macbooks are basically fancy looking pcs now with a different os.

Macs are picky about RAM. No one really knows why, but they are. Generally, people report higher success rates with Crucial RAM. You'll want to bookmark this Apple KB article about changing RAM in your MBP, and note the RAM specs listed: 204-pin, PC3-8500 DDR3 1066 MHz.

Go with 2x2GB. The Amazon link posted by bandit390 is exactly what you want, though you might be able to save a couple of bucks at Newegg.

It's picky about off brands most of the time. Crucial, Mushkin, Kingston, are mostly fine.

Generally it's a good idea to try and get ram that others have had success with installing on Macs, usually the Newegg reviews reveal this. I use OCZ DDR2 Ram on my Macbook.

They aren't nearly as picky as they used to be since they use Intel chipsets. OWC or Crucial and you're good and they are very reasonable on price.

first off... Gotta get 2x 2gb sticks. Currently on that model, there are going to be 2x1gb sticks installed in the only 2 available slots. I have done multiple memory upgrades, and most brands tend to work, but if you can find the Kingston DDR3 APPLE memory, it is guaranteed to work. It might be a little bit more expensive though, but hopefully not too bad.

Why is this thread still going? Well, in case someone else takes a look I just bought 4GB of Crucial from Newegg for $51 shipped and then 10% off through Bing. You need to get 2- 2GB sticks, otherwise the 4GB kit is $68+shipping right now.
