And it sits side by side to my aging Dell 1800FP...

It looks completely washed out and not nearly as vibrant.

In games, the response time is readily apparent, and I'm sure fast action BR movies will look spectacular on it, but in a regular windows setting it just feels underwhelming.

I am able to adjust a lot of setting both on the monitor itself (just a few available) and on my nvidia control panel. Currently, I have the monitor on "auto contrast" and in the control panel I had to crank the gamma, brightness, and contrast wayy down. Nevertheless, it just doesn't look very good compared to my other moniter.

One other thing... In the Nvidia control panel (and on the monitor), there appears to be a sharpness control yet both of them are unavailable for me to change.

Any ideas? Should I just return this to Costco and buy a different monitor, non-TN?

What would be a good match to my experience with the 1800FP?

Thanks!

I used to have a 1900FP and then several years later, I bought a Samsung PVA monitor. I have no idea what the 1900FP was but the upgrade was leaps and bounds better. Brighter screen, colors were better (but the 1900FP did not do that bad a job) and the pixel response rate was a huge improvement (quotes, 25ms to 16ms).

Right now I have the Samsung PVA monitor and a cheap TN on my desk. The colors by default on the TN screen were screwy to begin with and it needed a lot of tweaking so that the monitors looked similar.

Custom color temp
Custom color tune
Changed the gamma
Brightness/contrast

Considering I got a cheap Samsung TN to look somewhere in the ballpark of a PVA (except the colors and blacks are not as vibrant) tell me that even a TN if tweaked can look fairly good.

I've been looking at the 2209WA... And it looks very promising. Nevertheless, I want to give this monitor is few more days of tweaking before bringing it back. One thing that is really annoying me is that nothing looks very sharp. Its almost like when you walk into fry's and look at their craptastic monitor lineup with 50 monitors running off a single input stream. When I go into my Nvidia Control Panel to adjust sharpness, that option is greyed out and I don't know why...

Also, I don't seem to have an option to run Nvidia Display Optimization Wizard on Vista 32bit Business Ed.

Anyone have an idea why?

Are you using an analog connection?
Are you using something besides the native resolution?
Is Clear Type or any other 2d anti aliasing turned on?

A yes to any of these questions can make things look blurry.

DVI
Native Resolution
Standard Font type

I've cranked the contrast from 30 to about 60 and brightness from 10 to 78 and it seems to have brought the whites out. Still is far to bright for my taste, but I can't seem to bring it down without killing my whites and colors.

So you are saying I should stay away from this monitor? What would you say to someone looking for a TN panel monitor about the same size? That this viewsonic is no good or just stay away from TN panels since the color is terrible?

well, I'm a noob when it come to LCDs and tuning them to optimum capability. A lot of peps at AT got this moniter to work out for them just well. I'm started to change my opinion slowly, but I've been having to tweak it continuously for the past few days. I'll say this much, it is definitely height sensitive. Even typing in this text box looks different depending on if I put the box in the middle of my or on the lower part of the screen... I never had that issue with my old monitor.

I must agree, I'm not much of an expert either, but against your word, I went ahead and picked up my own yesterday. I can't really comment on it much since my main computer is down and I don't want to do much tweaking until I have it back up and running. But first impressions are ok, the colors seem off (again I have to tweak it) and there is a noticeable ammount of backlight bleed when it's on a black screen, I haven't been able to see backlight bleed until now. Although, I mainly purchased this monitor for it's screen realestate and fast response time (gamer), I'm fairly impresssed for how little I paid. Hopefully once I have my computer reformatted I can really get into it and calibrate it properly so I can play around with it some more. I've done a check for dead/bright dots and I haven't found any yet and with that said I'm very happy with my purchase.

Also I will try to post pictures within the week, except I need to fix up my own computer first, so it might take a little while.
