So i recently acquired a XFX Radeon DD 7950 Black Edition card. Here is the gpu-z screen shot and from what i see the memory clock seems higher than a stock black edition's should be
dnc.png

My idle temps seem rather high. Even when its displaying this login screen for a lenght of time

it runs at 58c even when i'm just internetting as shown:

I read thread on Tom's where some said if the temps are ok while gaming it's not really a problem. My temps running Watch Dogs are around 78c which is very good for high texture and the rest on ultra settings.

Solution: I figured out my idle temps come from having a buffered video loaded. Let say i have a documentary buffered on youtube, i never shut down my computer, and sometimes that stands like that for days. ok when i have a video buffered ready for watching the gpu temps are up to 60 without my custom profile. with my afterburner profile i put together with help from Araxie i get 50c temps when video is buffered. as soon as the tab is closed the temps go back down to 30c.

Yes that's fine.

What is happening is that at low load the GPU is running its fans VERY slowly to reduce noise, then at high load it ramps then up.

Having low idle temps is a thing of the past.

Having a more consistent smoother temp scale is better for the cards.

I would pull the cooler off if you live inside the us and check/redo the thermal grease. That along with using a fan curve of around 50% min fan speed will keep it a lot cooler. mine idles around 35 but i have done these things and have very good case air flow. I think that combined with the higher temps from summer is all it as but my fans stay at 60% min since the sound doesn't bother me...Also while i think the xfx dd cooler has a nice look to it its actually been noticed to not cool as well as some of the other brands. If you never tried it afterburner is a pretty nice app for setting up custom fan curves and making sure its down clocking correctly and many other things.

i really have no problems with summer winter temps fluctuations. i live in a 2 year old very well insulated home with a modern central air system. i have very poor airflow within my case, my psu has so damn many unused cables its fn retarded, so have the side panel off.

If you don't mind the noise, run the fans higher at idle to bring the idle temperatures down.

thats part of the problem with my case open and the tower being near my face it sort of is a problem.

50% fan speed noise on dd cooler is very low.....should not be louder than cpu/case/powersupply fans....but it is possible

Load temps are fine. Have you tried running gpu-z or afterburner, to check your usage while in idle?

afterburner shows very little useage i while checking it just now it sits at zero percent and i have the fan steady at 35% in ccc and it keeps it at 31c right now. so i guess the idle fan speed was just set too low. i think im going to keep it at 35% since my intel stock cpu fan is louder anyways (it went loud on me right after i installed the new psu and gpu i figure i musta hit it somehow someway). if i would run into a cheap aio id buy it.

are you serious? my 660ti idle at 30-34C.. my 780 idle at 30-31.. my 670 at 35.. so nope. not a thing of the past...

He's statement was partially correct in with people who refuse to set up fan curves and have very hot pc cases, is why i didn't dispute this. You are like me and have good airflow and probably set up fan curves from the get go, and this thread is proof of that, if you think about it. Basically your both correct;)

yes in fact i have a very aggressive fan curve which each degree C = 1% of fan RPM.. so at for example 65C = 65% and generally i do not see reaching more than that temperature..

you shouldn't need to set your fan speed any higher than the lowest setting when idling. if you do, you've got something seriously wrong with the airflow in your case that you need to fix. my 770 doesn't come out of 3D clocks ever because of my monitor setup, which puts it at 1084 MHz idle, and it never goes over 40C with 34% fan speed. fan curves are mainly to keep your card from running the fan too high at idle and too low under load. the fact that you run yours at 60% idle is insane. also, it's obvious if his card's load temperature is 78C that his idle temperature being high has nothing to do with his thermal compound.

you know what i might just give it a try maybe not so aggressive maybe in intervals of 3 but it makes sense how it could work :) :)

i set out to create my profile and i get a terrible feeling of self-doubt i would appreciate some screenshots of yours if its not too much to ask for just something to go by

this its what im using for all my cards...

as you can see in my line after 70% its very aggressive its just by the fact the my cards never go above those temp.. heavy gaming i see 65-58C when with the standard fan curve i can see it at 75-80C

thats about how far i got i was just getting a bit leary towards 70-80c marks

you will rarely see that card in that range of temp.. and with that fan curve you should have now a cooler card in any type of usage from low loads to full loads.. test it and tell us how you went with that fan curve..

well i just came from a 20 minute session of watch dogs. 78c. but the cool down from that to <45c was within a minute of exiting the game.

Do you have multiple monitors hooked up to the card? My 7970 runs in higher clocks with more than one monitor hooked up to it. Idk if this was ever fixed with drivers, but I just run the other monitors off of the processor's GPU to offload video rendering usage so I can play rome 2 or WoW while watching shows on amazon. Just finished parks and recreation!

no i just run a single 23'' asus @1080p. but last night i was watching a ball game from my pc without my afterburner fan profiles running and it went up to 60c. turned on after burner and it kept it around 50c

Where did you acquire the card?

With the memclock speed at 1375 does it stay constant when you load up a game and at idle at that amount?

1375 depending on where you got it from seems it was used for mining before and if your idle and load memory speeds are the same then it was likely used for mining as most miners lock the idle and load to the same amount to maintain constant mining.

This could explain the higher temps at idle, since the memory never goes down to idle clock speeds.

everything almost made sense :) i bought the card from craigslist and i figured yeah maybe thats it everything would make sense. but i checked and idle the core is at 300 and memory is at 150. the guy didnt even have it registered for warranty when i bought it. he didnt even realize that he was selling a black edition card. i found that out after registering it.
