This has been a fascinating, if not sometimes spirited, conversation
A lot of good info here. More about switches than Jumbo Frames
This weekend I re-arranged all my network stuff into a new 'cabinet', and found that I'm actually out of ports on my DLink DGS-2008. That won't do at all. And the 4 ports on the Router are all filled with 100mbit devices (printers, voip box, etc...)
Time for a larger switch. A 16 port.
After doing some price shopping, it looked like this would be a good time to step up one level in quality/performance. At least in perceived quality/performance. We'll see !
Since it was on sale for $189, I went with the Dell PowerConnect 2716.
16 GB ports, full wire speed, all the right protocol bullets, jumbo frames, and it's even 'semi-managed' via a web interface for VLAN, etc...
Looks like a decent compromise from the typical SoHo router under $100, and the dizzyingly expensive corporate stuff that seems to be in the thousands.
No complaints in online reviews, except one, and that is that there is no way to save custom configurations. Should not be an issue for me as I intend on using it in default, non-managed mode. At least to start.
