Apple will be a client of Ive’s new design company, LoveFrom, which the designer started in collaboration with his long-time friend and collaborator Marc Newson. “Apple will continue to benefit from Jony’s talents by working directly with him on exclusive projects, and through the ongoing work of the brilliant and passionate design team he has built,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook at the time. Software and hardware design is now the responsibility of COO Jeff Williams.

All eyes will now be on LoveFrom. Ive and Newson have a long history of collaborations that include the Apple Watch, a diamond ring, and a Christmas tree. Who knows, with any luck, maybe we’ll finally see what a mythical “Apple car” design could have been? Ive and Newson have long bemoaned the state of modern car design which has suddenly become interesting again.

Finally switched to a Samsung Note 10 Plus and I'm a little pissed I didn't switch from Apple sooner. I wonder where the design direction of Apple is going to go now that Jony is gone.

Am I wrong in thinking this happened many months ago?

FTA: "Jony Ive’s last day at Apple was always a bit of a mystery. The June press release originally announcing his departure only said that it would occur “later this year.”"

Apparently the mystery is now resolved.

Give it 6 months until your phone turns to a sluggish buggy pile of shit.

LOL, I have a Note 9 and it's just as fast as it was when I bought it last year.
Android is know for a lot of things. Long term software support, updates and staying usable after a year or two, are not any of them.

no doubt about it, Apple iPhones have the crown for software longevity and best bang for your buck with long term hardware.

Yup.

Apples industrial design in a nutshell.

1.) Rip off vintage Braun designs
2.) Rectangles with rounded corners

Number 2 is the short hand way of saying that Apple wanted to destroy Google for them stealing the “smartphone” concept after Larry Page and Sergey Brin (Google founders) and Eric Schmidt sat on the board of directors at Apple since Steve Jobs has taken a liking to the trio. They were privy to the secret development of the iPhone and then took that knowledge and bought the software OS company Android Inc. Google was then able to sell a similar product within less than a year. Steve Jobs took this very seriously and vowed to destroy Google. He couldn’t go after Google directly, so they instead focused on putting pressure on the companies that created Googles hardware. Samsung being the most prevalent. Apple tried to make it very hard for Google to continue copying Apple’s iPhone. Of course once Steve Jobs died and the company was headed by a much more passive individual all that animosity went away.

Looking back, it can now be simply summarized as “round corners”.

I think if apple went function over form, they`d have the industry on lock and key. Look at this years iphone and 16" macbook. No longer thin and light.

And both are selling very well from early numbers. I agree entirely. Worry less about being tiny and more about durability and performance.

That's kind of bull.

The iPhone was not a revolutionary new product when it launched.

It was evolutionary. The entire market was moving in that direction for many years, and Google's Android project had been in the works for a very long time as well.

Apple just happened to launch first. No one stole anything from them.

The iPhone was neither the first candybar format phone, not the first phone with a touch screen, or the first phone with a web browser.

They did what they always do. Take something that exists already, make it shiny, and simplify the user interface. That's all Apple has ever done in the entire history of the company. There has never been a new idea out of that place
