so i have been a computer tech for about 5 years i have no certs so just had a question on what certs make a tech more hire-able without having to do college i just cant currently fit in my schedule and such. So if anyone has any suggestion on how to become more hire-able as a computer tech. I also have 2 years of sales experience.

Do you have access to the subscription-based areas of this forum? I ask because there are a few threads there that deal with your question.

Well personaly I got my cert for A+ back in may '010 but i have been working on PC's since 05. The main reason i got my cert was for hire, but also i had a local it business that i was a student tech for a while and they told me if i had my cert i was guaranteed a job. So my opinion. Getting the cert doesn't hurt and it opens new doors. I am currently myself woring on my net+ and linux and server admin.

Edit: The reason I just got my cert is because i am only 20 :p

We hire based on experience and certifications. College education is nice, but if someone got their IT degree 10 years ago and didn't keep up on current trends, well, it's worthless to us. Certifications are really the only way we can see if people know what they are talking about and are current.

Not all companies are that way though. Some still hold the degree higher than all.

Exactly.

Myself i went to college and did the classes(college on hold no money) and i keep up the best i can by asking questions and researching. Personally I am learning ever day. I real droped the times on say a clean up and optimization with virus removal. Ones you get the tricks and tips it really help. But ofcourse things like server management and 50 node networks with specialized state software makes me shy away. (kalkaska country MI. We have them under contract. PITA i tell you. There cheap and want everything done yesterday[that part is not bad, cause they are government and are important])

i dont have subscription based forums. more info i only make 13 an hour but currently hold the title manager at my current shop but was kinda looking for something more i only get paid no benfits retirement nothing else. so a+ is a suggested to start with.

Try the forums at techexams.net they talk about certifications all the time.

A+ is a good start, it'll probably be really easy for you. After that you need to figure out if you want to go in System Administration which is Microsoft or Networking which is Cisco. There's also Linux and and security routes which have their own niche certs.
