Hey Guys,

I recently loaded the half life demo on my computer, played it for about 2 hours last night, went to play it today and it crashed so i installed the program that came with my jetway A210GDMS PRO motherboard to check the temps every time i enter any game now my temps on the northbridge go above the allowed maximum and some alarm goes off. I have only played on other game on the system since ive built it but never had any crashes until today.

I was thinking of changing the case fan maybe? I am using all the stock cooling but i havent OCed yet. My idle temps are according to the programs CPU:47C and NB: 49C
according to my bios though my CPU temps are at 50-52C.

I am using the onboard graphics so I can understand temps going up but I dont know y this all of sudden started happening.

I put my hand on the heatsink for the NB and it was warm I dont know if thats good or bad?

My system:

A643000+ venice with stock hs/fan
Jetway A210GDMS PRO
(2x512mb) Corsair value select DDR400
Chenming 118 SFF case
integrated graphics x300 equivilency
Seagate 7200.8 250GB HDD
winfast tv2000XP tv tuner card

i was playing the HL2 demo. My stock CPU fan says its running at max even when im not really doing anything. Its the North bridge temps that go up past max and my CPU temps go up about 3C

The temps of the bios compared to the program werent too much different they were a little higher though.

I am baffled cuz i played the demo for a couple hours yesterday and it didnt freeze or anything.

I need some suggestions for fixing this.

I would take the NB cooler off and take a look at it, all mobo manufacturers are sadly lacking in making sure the NB has a proper thermal interface.
 
Well if i took it off wouldnt i need to reapply thermal grease or wutever?

and if i do wut thermal grease should i use and how do i get off the previous stuff?

alcohol and paper towel is what I use, then alcohol and qtips to clean up residue.For replacement, doesn't really matter. I get the cheap as alumina stuff from svc.com
 
Personally, I think that thermal sensor is not accurate, but maybe it is not seating right? 50° is still high.

I think all of the Radeon Xpress boards use a thin, sticky adhesive to mount the north/south bridge. Work it off there and apply anything else. Grab some alumina or ceramique off of BestByteInc.com - they should be cheap + cheap shipping. They have goofed on enough of my last few orders, but it would be pretty hard to screw up one order of Alumina! Worst case they err in your favor.
 
I would go with svc.com, they are cheap on paste as well and they have never fudged any of my at least 8 orders from them
 
Ok sounds good guys, but wut is alumina? And I was looking at the heatsink on the northbridge/IGP it looks like there are some springs on it on each side holding it in, when i get the new thermal grease i will attempt to take it off. I was thinking off getting this Arctic silver 5 that alumina stuff is nice and cheap but with shipping it would be just as much as the arctic silver 5 so i figure ill just go with that.

For taking off the old stuff what do i do if its one of those pads?

and if its just thermal grease can i use anygrade of rubbing alcohol(ispropyll) or do i need the good stuff?

for removing heatsink grease i have used simple liquid dish soap . this has worked for me on several different types of grease.

I never tried soap but, I have tried alcohol 70-90% and it all works good :) you can try soap too
