I have a camera with a SD memory card. Speed of the card is Class 2. I've recorded some videos with this camera. I know that Class 2 is deemed slow for video recording but I did it anyway. Playback on the camera looks perfect.

However, after copying and then playing back the files on my computer, I'm getting very noticeable jerky framerates.

The second problem I have is with the longest recorded video on the camera. This file would playback fine on the camera but wouldn't copy over to the computer.

By the way, in case it matters, the computer in question is a Pentium 4 with an nVidia FX5200 w/ 128 megs and 1 gb of DDR memory.

Are there any troubleshooting tips for these?
 
Did these problems come recently? Was it working properly before?

I'm not sure if class is related to it. To overload a class 2 memory card, you'll need to have a video encoded at 16megabit. Class is the absolute minimum speed you can write to a memory card. And it's in Megabytes, not megabits.

There are cameras that take pictures and save them as files that are bigger than 1MB. Higher classes means you get to take the next picture sooner (Think of it as a winder for old film cameras). A typical point and shoot camera creates 600 maybe 800 kilobyte files, that would mean i can shoot at around three times a second for a class 2 card.

Videos need even less. A 640x480 video is around 400MB for a ten minute segment. That would mean 40MB a minute, or 600KB a second. To exceed a class 2, you would have to be recording at 120MB a minute, or 1.2Gigabytes for a ten minute video.

Read speed is even less of a problem. Class 2 means you save at 2MB per second, read speed is typically much higher. You say playback on the camera is perfect, so obviously the data is being saved to the SD card just fine.

I'd look at your video codecs. What codec pack are you using? (i use k-lite) It may be outdated codecs. There's also the possibility of the player feeding unsupported video data to your GPU (Those digital cameras are nasty on the codecs).

You can also try running your videos through a video converter. If my hardware doesn't support a video, i typically run it through a video converter, and it usually spits out something i can play normally.

If you're having trouble pulling videos off the card, have you tried connecting the camera to the USB port and copying files through that?

Yeah that system would struggle at 720p, let alone if it's a 1080p video.

I misread and thought it was an ATI. Tho i should have wondered how a P4 was able to install an ATI5xxx series card :eek:

Weak CPU (P4 was good back in the day), weaker GPU (FX5200 was already crap when it came out). Get a new computer.

How were you able to play it before? Or is that camera new?

This means you file is on the hard drive of the computer and playback is slow/jerky. This is due to the fact that even higher end pentium 4 have issues playing anything over 720P, let alone a FX5200. A cheap GPU upgrade may take some of the work away like a Geforce 7xxx series (7800GS maybe).

The maximum possible size for a file on a FAT32 volume is 4 GB minus 1 byte or 4,294,967,295 (232−1) bytes. This limit is a consequence of the file length entry in the directory table and would also affect huge FAT16 partitions with a sufficient sector size.[1] Video applications, large databases, and some other software easily exceed this limit. Playback from a SD card isn't limited by its class rating. The writing to the card is limited by the class.
 
And regarding the inability to copy the large file over to the computer. If that system is as old as i think it is and you haven't updated your OS. It's probably running on FAT32 (Heck! Might even be just FAT!). FAT doesn't support files bigger than 4 gigs.

Funny how i didn't comprehend the actual state of the system until i realized what video card it actually had. Must be my gamer side :D
 
Just to add more details to my original post:

This system doesn't have a memory card slot. My only method of transferring files from camera/memory card to system is through usb 2.0, using a micro-usb connector. Again, the largest video file from the camera would not transfer to the computer. The system would just hang for a while when attempting a copy and paste.

The issue with jerky playback always existed. The image quality is also subpar on the computer but I'm not sure if this is due to the poor playback quality. The camera in question is a Nikon Coolpix S6000.

This system is running Windows XP, using the NTFS file system.
 
Can a 32 bit OS handle a really big file? :confused:

How big was the file you were trying to transfer?
