JBOD and Power supply modification

Recently I got my hands on 2 of these old scsi jbods

I gutted the scsi stuff out and am waiting for chenbro's ck12802 sas expander or an equivalent expander to be available that has 15 ports.

Anyway, one issue with this jbod is the power supplies. There are 2 redundant hotswap power supplies in each jbod.

The issues I would like to do something about are:
1) The jbod power supplies are only 318W so I am worried that if one died, the other might not be able to handle the spin up of 15 disks at the same time. The jbod is originally designed for 9 scsi disks.
2) They are old and eventually will die, although I'm only planning on using one of the jbods, so I'll have 2 extra backup power supplies from the other one
3) These power supplies are very loud, I would really like to replace them with quieter ones

The power supply itself is normal ATX size and sits in this tray, so replacing it would not be a problem, however it has non-standard conections

The layout of the cables to the pins from the left are as follows:
-5V 1 white
+12V 3 yellow
+5V 3 red
+5V 3red
Ground 2 black
Ground 2 black
Ground 3 black
Ground 3 black

So anyway, I tried to replace one of these with a normal power supply, cutting the correct number of cables and using electrical tape to secure it just for this test

However, I ran across some problems

One issue is that the jbod power supplies power on as soon as you plug them in and flip the switch, normal power supplies need a signal from the motherboard to power on.
I read somewhere that if you short the green cable from the 20 pin motherboard connector and a black ground cable, it will turn on the power supply. I tried this but it did not work. Every time I would touch the 2 cables I would hear a beeping sound, but nothing would power on.

So anyway, I have a couple of questions:
1) How would I make a normal power supply always just come on when it receives power?
2) The jbod power supply had at most 3 cables connected to each pin. If I used a higher watt power supply, should I connect maybe 4 cables to the pin? Or would that not make much of a difference.
3) If I can make this work, what would be the best/safest way to handle the extra cables that are not hooked up to the pins? Just leave inside their connectors?
 
If your useing new drives and a new power supply do you need to use the old wireing ??

Unless there is a back plane that all the drives must plug into, then I'd just rip out all the old wireing and connect the drives directly to the power supply via the sata/molex cables as needed.
No drive now needs to -5v rail to work.
Its was probably needed of the early SCSI high voltage signaling.
Which i why I'd pull it all and use new stuff.

True, but then I wouldn't have hotswap or redundancy anymore
Would still have to figure out how to make the power supply turn on automaticly when its plugged in.

Also, I am not sure what the -5V is used for. All of the scsi drive enclosures were connected by basic molex connectors. It must be used for the enclosure failure messages and leds
 
To turn a supply on, just jumper the green to any black in the ATX connector..
A paper clip makes a good jumper.
I tend to attach an old drive when I do that, just to give the power supply a load on the 12v & 5v rails.
