Sun Microsystems plans to turn over the desktop development platform for the Java Standard Edition to the OpenJDK community. According to this report, the Java JDK will be distributed as open source software from this point forward.

Sun Microsystems Inc. announced Tuesday it has finished the process of making the bulk of its core Java technology available as open-source software under the GNU general public license version 2 (GPLv2). The vendor made the announcement at its JavaOne conference in San Francisco.

Yay.... instead of fixing all the security holes in java, Sun will pass the buck to the "open source" community, and save themselves the effort. Of course if they were capable of doing the job at all, they probably would have done it years ago.
Pathetic.

get money while other people fix your bugs for free, there is nothing better.

This is LONG overdue. Should have been done before open-sourcing solairis.

That's too bad. I was hoping for java to just die. While I dont know much about it's abilities as far as functionality, it's ability to piss off anyone in a support role is world renouned. That and Cisco couldent program a Java application correctly to save their life.
