What happens when you fail to comply with direct order from the police? You go to jail. Yes, even if that request is something as goofy as using Twitter to disperse a crowd of teenager girls.

That's what happened after his presence caused 3,000 hysteric teen girls to march into the Roosevelt Field mall, pushing everyone and each other aggressively. The police asked him to use Twitter to help disperse the multitude, which was getting increasingly violent. When he didn't comply, they arrested Bieber's label VP, James A. Roppo.

wow send them all to jail the girls, there parents and that kid. who the hell starts a riot because of some kid that i bet cant sing.

He actually isn't that bad of a singer, this is the kid Usher found on myspace or something

I guess freedom of speech is on vacation this decade, it went with the First Amendment and the rest of the Bill of Rights.

Wow, so what laws did he break?

Girls and adults in the crowd of nearly 3,000 started pushing and shoving as they waited Friday for the 15-year-old to show up at a clothing store at the Roosevelt Field Mall in Garden City, east of New York City.

Bieber's appearance was still two hours away when things got out of hand. Five people were taken to hospitals with minor injuries.

"People started screaming, 'Justin!' And they ran forward and the ropes collapsed," said 13-year-old Aimee Macchi. She said she was knocked to the floor in the rush. "Everyone was pushing. There was no room to breathe."

Police arrested a vice president from Bieber's record label, Island Def Jam Records, saying he was not cooperating with attempts to disperse the crowd.

James Roppo, 44, of Hoboken, New Jersey, was charged with a series of misdemeanors, including endangering the welfare of children and obstructing governmental administration.

"We asked for his help in getting the crowd to go away by sending out a Twitter message," said Nassau County Police Det. Lt. Kevin Smith. "By not cooperating with us, we feel he put lives in danger and the public at risk."

There was some other article that mentioned felony assault charges as well. So pretty much it's assault, instigating/conducting a riot (by egging fans via twitter), obstruction of justice(not tweeting the rioters to stop.,) and endagering the welfare of children.

so crap crap and more crap.

In all, it would have been "nice" for him to help out. but the damn police should have done thier job to control the crowd.

What do you expect with 3000 teanagers lol

Apparently not saying what you're told to say, and where they tell you to say it. Cops can pretty much twist anything into "you're violating a law!"

It's all fun and games till some gets trampled and there's no one to blame for it.

What a freaking joke. I guess you have to do what your are told or the gestapo will take you away.

It will probably get thrown out unless he really was instigating the furor himself via twitter or some other means...

More likely: the Police failed to do what was needed. In their defense it was 3000 crazed teenage girls. In the record label's defense, a tweet wouldn't have likely helped. It was 3000 crazed teenage girls.

Umm the cops were pretty dumb here. Don't they realize that this guy is MPAA and that has a higher authority than the Police?

How is a twitter message supposed to stop 3000 hysteric teenage girls? The VP shouldn't have needed to do that, as that is not his job. His job is to manage his record label, and police's job is to keep the peace in an orderly fashion. Seems like police too lazy to do their job and put the blame on the record label exec.

From what I've seen with "Kids these days", a tweet was probably the only thing that could have stopped 3000 manic 13-year-olds.
Tweens are positively Pavlovian when it comes to tweets.

They should have jailed the parents for raising 3000 airheads! They must all be so proud of their contribution to the gene pool.

Damn you Justin Bieber. Reminds me of the South Park episode of the Jonas Brothers and the purity ring. So many crazy girls who would drop their panties at a whim for a stupid looking kid just because he sings.
Hey, I'm just jealous. :)

Freedom of speech doesn't extend to endangering the public. If his tweets caused the thing, then asking him to diffuse it the same way was his out. He didn't take it. Hence his arrest.

Technically, they were a mob, and technically it was a riot. I guess the police should've brought out their anti-riot gear. You know, on a bunch of teenage girls.

Along with the fire hoses, pepper gernades, rubber bullets an batons for some good old teenage ass whoopin.

I'm joking for all you out there with no sense of humor

I think everyone involved with this story acted stupidly. The girls, the parents, the cops, the singer, the record label...well, maybe not the record label, but it's well-known that record labels are stupid, anyway. :p

Maybe you can justify saying freedom of speech doesn't apply, and arrest somebody for something they said, but they didn't arrest him for that. They arrested him, and they said this was the reason, for NOT saying something.

Telling somebody "Say what we tell you to say or we'll arrest you" should not be allowed. If they want to say he previously used twitter to break a law they can charge him on THAT. To charge him for NOT using twitter though is wrong.

Please, it's not his job to serve and protect, it's the FUCKING POLICE'S job to do that. If they're not willing to grow a pair and tell a bunch of screaming girls to get the hell out, they need to change professions.
There's a serious lack of accoutability here, and it isn't on this guy for not tweeting. Hell he should go to jail for using twitter in the 1st place, as should the rest of the people there for using twitter.

Lets see. Tweeting (which they may or may not read being that its ONLINE) or using the mall PA system. Humm... TWEET!

O wait. These are modern 10-15 year old girls. Their parents all bought them cell phones.

Except the headline is sensational bullshit.

He didn't get in trouble for not twittering, he got in trouble for inciting a mob and creating violence. The police OFFERED him an easy way out and he chose not to take it.

Claiming he was sent to jail for not twittering is no different then claiming someone was imprisoned for not accepting a plea bargain, while completely ignoring the reason that were being offered the bargain in the first place.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that sees public endangerment in something like this.

I'm surprised that they actually jailed someone (especially if he didn't start shit with an officer) over this though.

I imagine The Beatles went through some similar problems.

My store actually sealed off our mall-side entrance because of this. Fire code be damned, we don't want agitated minors in our store.

I'm pretty willing to be they tried that.

I can think of worse things than being mobbed by teenage girls. If I were that cop, I probably would have enjoyed it.

The kid's not the bad of a singer. He was recently interviewed by a local radio station here. He seemed pretty cool. Do I agree with the hysteria? Heck no. But I do think the kid's got some talent.

Till he hits puberty....

I seriously thought this was some girl singing when I heard it on my gf's ipod.

I dont know why everyone here has their panties in a bunch. They found a guy that they thought had the power to disperse the crowd, he refused to even try. So they nab him. Shoulda done what the cop told him to, even if it wouldnt have worked. He was probabley being a dick too, deserved a tasing. You guys are acting like they violated his right of free speech or something.

If some big band told everyone to go riot, and they did shouldnt said band be held accountable? This is different but the point is, he MAY have had the ability to stop it, and didnt even try.
