I keep seeing this mistake in various threads mentioning the iPhone. Jailbroken does not mean unlocked. They are two completely different things.

Jailbroken means that you can install basically whatever software you want on the iPhone. Different backgrounds, skins, apps, whatever you want.

Unlocked means you can use it on any GSM-based network you want. For US customers, this basically means the ability to use it on T-Mobile.

Just putting that out there.

jail-breaked DOES mean unlocked - from a software perspective.

you should use 'carrier unlocked'

Well, no, the OP is quite correct. When someone says "my iPhone is unlocked" it's implicitly understood (unless you're a moron, I guess) that it means it's open for use with any carrier that can support it's functionality (meaning not Verizon, of course).

You can Jailbreak an iPhone (and an iPod touch also but as we're specifically mentioning unlocking that's a phone-only aspect) without unlocking it, sooo... they are two different things.

"Jail-breaked"... that's a cute way to say Jailbroken... ;)

yep.. it's a very common misconception.. unlocked = use on any carrier, jb = run any 3rd party apps you want... you can jb an ipod (touch), but you can't unlock it..
