Jack Thompson has issued an ultimatum to Bill Gates over Halo 3. Obviously this is just another attempt by Jack to grab some headlines but threatening the richest man in the world could seriously blow up in his face.

Here’s the deal, Mr. Gates: Either Microsoft undertakes dramatic, real steps, through its marketing, wholesale, and retail operations to assure that Halo 3 is not sold, via the Internet and in stores, directly to anyone under 17, or I shall proceed to make sure that Microsoft is held to that standard by appropriate legal means. I have done that before successfully as to Best Buy, and I shall do so again as to Microsoft and all retailers of Halo 3.

Now to whats going to happen. Bill Gates is going to laugh, and the he is going to laugh some more, and probably after that, laugh again. Honestly, do you think he would listen. First he is the richest man in the world and can hire lawyers left and right. Second, do you think he cares?

I seriously hope Bill takes you down and shut you up for once because this is getting ridicolous. You have never won yet, what makes you think you are going to win this one?
 
So after reading this and his suit against (among others) Kotaku and the Florida Bar, I have to seriously ask if this guy got hit in the head or had some other accident. Seriously, the wording on these make me ask that (really, not kidding).

I recall seeing all those posts about Jack on Kotaku. Had no idea he threatened to sue them.
 
How is this guy still in business?

First, I'd like to point out that an FPS does not transfer out to real-world shooting. If it did, I'd be a world class competitive shooter. Using the death of innocent people to further your two-bit agenda is just completely disrespectful to the victims.

I'm 16, I play FPS, I don't shoot anyone, and last time I checked the kid next door with Halo 2 running all night doesn't either.

In short, Jack Thompson is stupid if anything. This is Microsoft we are talking about. How does he expect to win against a multinational corporation and not have people in absolute rage surround him? And why is he even suing MS in the first place? Let's look at my analogy.

Easton makes bats. A guy is beaten with a bat. In all logic, the victim should be suing the guy who beat him, not Easton.

It's a free country, and a lot of stuff happens, but this takes the cake for absolute stupidity.
 
Bill G. Should buy out this guys life... and shut it down. Buy the land he lives on, buy the phone company he uses, destroy his life with sheer volumes of ben franklins.

I sincerely doubt that. Gimme a friggin BREAK. I was playing Duke Nukem 3D when I was 11, paying strippers in the game to take their tops off and gibbing aliens into a million pieces. The idea that absolutely no human being can handle any violence until they are 17 is absurd. If I had to go ask my dad to buy the game, fine... but I didn't at the time.

Well, when looking at games, I'm not sure why Jack (ass) Thompson here is going after Halo and Microsoft. Compared to games I play, Halo is barely gruesome. Anyone play FEAR or Doom 3 will know what I'm talking about. This reeks of a publicity stunt.

You know, that is REALLY what I would like someone to say to Jack Thompson! Fuck you, goodbye, don't let the door hit you on the way out while my men are CARRYING you out.

Seriously, does Jack Thompson REALLY think he is going to win this battle? As I have said numerous times before, the real issue behind violence in real life is NOT violence in games, movies, etc. The real issue behind violence in real life is that most of the people who are violent in real life have a mental illness, have been beaten or physically abused as children, or have seen their mother hitting daddy or vice-versa.

Why doesn't Jack Thompson focus on those problems? Answer: Because he would have an outcry from his conservative supports that would make the outcry that Foley had against him look SMALL in comparison!
 
I'm still surprised he can still practice law. He's got his license to practice law revoked before. I think the RIAA, MPAA, Jack Thompson, and SONY's exec's are aliens because that is the only way I can think of for them to be so clueless.

Suing Microsoft for selling Halo 3 is like suing Loews Cinemas for showing Pan's Labyrinth. The individual businesses selling the product, not the producers of the product, are responsible for enforcing any age restrictions on the transaction.

Is this guy really a lawyer, or does he just play one on t.v.?
 
Why do people think its the MANUFACTURERS responsibility to ensure that the ratings system is enforced?

Its not like MS is directly selling this shit to kids... Blame the retailers not enforcing this crap, not the people making it.

As much as I may dislike Bill Gates, I think Jack has really picked the wrong guy to threaten.

I think the #1 cause of global warming is Jack Thompson blowing out hot air. It's gotten to the point where everytime I read a quote of his, my mind's voice just makes gum-flapping noises!
 
Jack is seriously out of his fucking mind. I for the life of me can't understand how he passed his court ordered mental evaluation (happened in FL, no?)...

As pretty much all others said, Bill Gates (and M$) are not entities you want to screw with Jack - what a dipshit. Billy makes enough in a quick morning dump to sue this moron into oblivion. Does Jack not understand the seemingly direct correlation between threatening a game maker with a lawsuit and it's rise in popularity? I've not played since Halo 1 (hey it's M$'s fault they take so damned long to port their crap to the PC), but I think it's safe to say that the franchise isn't going ANYWHERE, nothing due to Wacky Jacky at least.

Lastly, there's only so many times he can pull bullshit stunts like these before it comes back to bite him in the ass - and hard. A civil suit will do NOTHING though - oh no, he might owe M$ a few million (that never gets collected likely anyway)...He needs to be hit with a stint in state (or federal) lockup and be brutally raped by Bubba. There has got to be some sort of criminal nuisance laws or something that could be applied either in FL or in any of the states M$ operates in for that matter. Someone please take this dumbass down - I'm sick and tired of having his pathetic ass popping up in the news all the time.
 
I hear so much about Jack trying to sue someone for something related to video games but I NEVER EVER hear anything about him getting his way. I have no clue why he doesnt go to some other company that produces more violent games than Halo 2 and tries to sue them. Most people view microsoft as a software company, not a video game producer. If I were to hear this on the news or read it on the news paper my first reaction would be "Why the hell Microsoft?". If hes going to try and make a point, why not try and do it to hmmm Rockstar Games.. OOO or even CS!! His beloved CS!? I mean come on GTA is pretty violent, if hes going to try something stupid why not go after a company of that sort.

Games do not convince me in any way to go out and kill people. They arent even close to a training simulation. Its not so simple to play a FPS game then go out and do that same act of shooting someone point blank irl. It will take something a lot more than playing Counter Strike or GTA day in and day out to do something of that.. idiocity.

To make my final point.. although my points are rather sketchy and dont really make sense. This guy is like an annoying shit fly that wont go away.

It's gotten to the point where every time I see a Jack Thompson utterance reported my faith in humanity gets eroded just that little bit more. Not because of Jack and his extreme over-simplifications. Because of the responses they elicit!


I had a glance over this discussion in the hope that I'd find something better than the inane diatribes you find on kiddie gamer sites. This forum is generally a bit more mature than that generally, and often has mature and quite interesting discussions. But this discussion? Same shit, different place! Just another repition of the same tired expressions of anger and violence which makes the message of people like Jack so appealing to so many reasonable and decent people!

That's the way to respond to people like Jack. The only thing the "Fuck you!" and "He should die!" comments do is lend legitimacy to his outrageous comments.
