Specs:

Cpu: Xeon e3-1220 v2 (quad core ivy bridge 3.1ghz)

Motherboard: Asus P8z77-v LK

Ram: 16gb ddr3 1600

GPUs: (2x) XFX rx580 (1150/2125, 915mV core)

480gb ssd

PSU: Corsair 750

Case: Corsair Carbide Spec 02 (2x 140mm in, 1x 120 mm out + the psu fan going out)

Heatsink: old Xigmatek HDT- S1283 with nice Delta 120mm fan

So I am GPU mining with this rig when it’s not playing games... but when it’s mining the cpu is idling at 45C

Is this normal? I feel like it should idol significantly cooler than that, that being said I know the graphics cards are putting out quite a few lots of heat and the CPU is up at the top of the case so likely it is pulling heat from the graphics cards upward and on to the heat sink for the CPU

you answered your own question... you only have to stop mining and check for yourself how the CPU behave on idle and under load.

Doesn't mining use a lot of CPU utilization? This shouldn't be a surprise to you. Also 45C is nothing so I wouldn't even worry.

No not GPU mining... I normally see about 3-5% there is a bit of a spike when your are loading stuff... but that’s not a huge part of the utilization

Could be the CPU fan policy. You are 55C from the limit so the fan need not be spinning very fast..

Edit: my other option is improper thermal compound application. Too much or too little can cause higher temps.

Could also be a factor.

I feel like it’s hot for doing nothing
but it is doing something, mining will still use a bit of cpu. if it is sitting at full speed during mining that would bring the temp up by itself too.

Well I was using bunk software... I installed HWMonitor and with nothing running the hottest core was 31c (room temp is about 26c)

While mining I saw about 33c max

Prime95 showed cores between 37c and 42c with a slight increase in fan speed (PWM fan)
