I picked up the Gigabyte UDH5 from Newegg. Unfortunately, got random crashes in bios/etc at stock voltage.. at idle.. at all times. This seems to be a problem.

Called Newegg. Very nice, says return it.

So, I didn't want to be without board and went to local TigerDirect/CompUsa/etc -- most rude service on phone ever. I picked up the Asus Sabretooth...

No. One ram slot was bad and they don't have any more in stock. So now I either have to go with the $290 MB or wait another week or go with a very cheap one.

Not a good experience. Maybe should have waited..
 
Yes, ram works in every other slot. Put any ram into that slot and it fails. Leave ram out of that slot and it works.

The Giabyte UD5hH boards have some sort of known/semi known issue with crashing when idle. Many suggestions have been presented but no one knows why for sure...

Bad luck man, sorry to hear. Why not try the P8Z77-V Pro? It's on sale for $209CAD up here, not much more than the UD5H.
 
I was running the p8z77-v pro for a few weeks, no problems at all. Only reason I'm not running it anymore is because of some z77 chipset limitations that I found out about after I had bought the board (lack of vt-d support was the main reason). it was otherwise a solid board.
 
The Sabertooth boards are among the best built motherboards on the market IMO. You just have to worst luck ever to get not only a bad Gigabyte board but a bad Sabertooth. Honestly, Id hold out for the Sabertooth. Once you get the new one in, youll have one of the baddest boards around thatll stand up to any amount of abuse youll throw at it.
