Just saw this beta bios for my board, don't know why they would have this 6 months before ivy bridge is supposed to be out unless it is coming out earlier? (just eagerly hoping)
Maximus IV Gene-z 0902 BIOS
1. Enable support for Next Gen 22nm Processor.

i doubt it would since BD didnt stack up. I sure hope it doesnt go the other way and they take their sweet time as the competition isnt there. Would sure make a nice Xmas present though hehe.

They probably get it out earlier for testing. I'm not sure why they would release it to the public so early though.

I have held a HSF made for the 2011 socket. It currently sits in a box, waiting for the socket it was designed for to be released...

IvyBridge is pin compatible with current gen. So all the bios is probably doing is recognizing the new processor as something the motherboard can work with, and the specifications for them.

Once the chips come out they are likely to get updated for the latest Intel guidelines for the voltages etc.

I think part of the reason is that no Mobo vendor wants to be seen as falling behind the other. So if one announces support (whatever that means), everyone else too will follow.

Well if these mobo manufacturers are going to advertise Ivy support on the box, it only makes sense to me that they would have a basic bios available that supports it.

Otherwise its akin to false advertising.

Dont keep your hopes up for an early release, I cant remember the last time they ever put out anything early.

Knowing how workplaces uses deadlines to get things done, don't ever expect anything early. Anything thats considered ontime is already a big win. Besides, all we have at the moment is production starting before the end of the year, 1st half 2012 for release date, and that can mean anything and will usually mean late 1st half too.

Haha, I highly doubt it. They even pushed back SB-E before BD's release.

Also, it's just a beta BIOS for testing. ASUS probably got an early Ivy sample to test in their boards to develop a BIOS far ahead of time.

Since the % of customers that actually updates bios is fairly low they probably want to start shipping boards with this support ASAP so more people can have this as an upgrade option without having to do a thing, and to clear supply chains of first rev "incompatible" (out of the box at least) boards. Nothing is more annoying than getting a brand new MB and "tock" CPU only to realize "shit, I have to beg/borrow/buy/steal a 'tick' CPU for like 5 minutes JUST so I can update this retardo BIOS so it recognizes and I can finally use this 'tock' CPU". If they're shipping a new BIOS why not release it so people with existing boards can upgrade too.

thanks to failure of bd intel can now relax on their roadmaps ugh

 It's not even a week since it launched. It's not a bad CPU and marketed correctly i think AMD has a good chance to do well with mainstream PC builders.

At least they put something out and have a road map.

I don't think Intel should be resting right now.

They push the BIOS update out EARLY so by the time Ivy Bridge ships all the latest boards they have in the channel will have had support for months.

It's also a good idea to test it NOW and now on day of release.

Bulldozer has the IPC of a Core 2.

Intel R&D could get wasted for the next year, decide to slap two SB quads on the same package, and still have a faster CPU that uses less power.

But they won't -- since their real threat isn't AMD -- it's ARM eating away at the mobile space.

Intel needs to give people a reason to still buy laptops/desktops -- it has NOTHING to do with AMD.

The BIOS is not all that makes Ivy Bridge, it will also come with a new Panther Point chipset, with native USB 3.0 support at last!

I just hope my motherboard releases a bios to support IB processors. ;)

very true, arm has what 85% of the market? I am kind of shocked intel has not made a dent on the mobile space yet

I wouldn't really read too much into a motherboard gaining 22nm BIOS support. Since AMD isn't pushing them with anything competitive, Intel can take their time and dance to the tune of their own flute. They're in no rush at all.

Motherboard manufacturers do their own thing for their own reasons - in this case probably just beta-testing a BIOS they're going to be needing soon. If you've got code in a state that it can be pushed out the door to be tested in the big bad world, why not do it? Testing for 6 months is better than testing for 2 months.
