When ever i have itunes playing windows xp randomly locks up. The cpu usage bar jumps up to 50% in task manager and all open windows become unresponsive. i used to have this same problem on my 5 year old gateway laptop but even on my brand new build it's doing it too. my specs: c2d e6600, g.skill 800 ram, p5w hd mobo, raid1 wd320's, os on seperate 80gig wd. I have over 20k mp3's on shuffle, but i don't understand why it's doing this. i've tried older versions and still no luck so i know it's not just the bloated itunes 7. i can't stand winamp or fubar, itunes' media library and retagging menus are alot more intuitive. Anyone else with this problem or know a solution?

First, let me be the first to say that advertising the fact that you have over 20,000 MP3s is not advisable. Although the case very well may be that you've laboriously ripped and encoded your own CDs (all one thousand, eight hundred+ of them if they average eleven tracks), the likelihood is greater that you're a pirate and worthy of any suit that the RIAA may or may not happen to throw your way. I live and work in this industry, and while I do not agree with the RIAA's tactics, piracy is a significant and serious issue in the 21st century. Pirating music and movies hurts me and my peers.

I am not making any accusations, but I do suggest that when you (and everyone else) make certain decisions, you consider the people behind the music.

That being said, I don't think I can offer any help with your issue. Your library is likely far too large than iTunes can comfortably handle. You can contact Apple if you really want this issue to be fixed, but they probably won't offer any stellar support to anyone who really hasn't used the iTunes music store.

And, for reference, the combined weight of 1,900 CDs, each CD weighing an average of 15 grams, is roughly sixty-six pounds. Sixty-six pounds.

Actually it's around 600 cd's, 200 vinyl rips, 60 cassette rips, 17 boxsets, various netlabel releases, unsigned artists, concert bootlegs, etc. i'm an avid collector of industrial. but thanks for the warning, and my shelves are holding up nicely, 29" shelfroom holds 71 cd's x 10 shelves on a 6' unit. holds all the regular jewelcases. when i go to the local indie shops they always ask if i'm a dj because i buy so much.

Not to mention how long it takes to listen to all those tracks :p

3min avg per track x 20000 = 60000 minutes
60000min / 60 = 1000 hrs

1000hrs / 24 = 41.667 days straight to listen to them all. Hehehe, thats a lot of listening.

Anyhow, itunes may not like that many songs even though i have know people online that have had up to 36,000 tracks in itunes.

One thing you could try is deleting the itunes database files in My Musc/itunes and then readding all your songs. Note that if you delete the database files itunes will not have any music in it till you readd it.
