Ok, here's my dilemma. I haven't had Itunes on my pc for about 2 years. Since then I've performed several reformats etc etc. Of course I have an iphone and I'd like to sync it with this pc. This pc has been formatted / setup TODAY again for testing. (XP Pro)

I've downloaded and installed the latest version of Itunes. I've rebooted, then tried to open Itunes. It shows the hour glass like its going to open, then nothing happens. I open task manager, and it shows running, however I can't see it anywhere on my screen nor can I alt tab to it either.

Any suggestions on how to get this invisible Itunes visible? I'm at a loss as I've never experienced this with Itunes before.

great the people at the apple forums are less knowledgeable than I am. I've posted, but I'm not holding out for any hope.

Ok, discovered what my issue was. I Nlited my XP disc and didn't install Smart Card service. Reinstalled that service. Tested and aok.

That actually makes sense. iTunes uses machine specifics and hardware to build its key for the DRM and activation of your account with Apple. Smart Card services in XP are used for security based authentication such as the Trusted Platform Module, biometric authentication, proximity authentication, etc. and is an open API standard. For a software developer, using those APIs versus rolling your own would save a lot of time and frustration.

so because of DRM? never think Smart Card service so important...

but i guess DRM tech will be kicked out of the stage soon. right?
