If your going to get serious about vmware go and take the class that is required to get your VCP. Even if you don't get the certification there's lots of great information out of those classes
 
Knowing what little I do about him he's not in that position yet. He's learning for fun. That book is a great start.
 
Scott's book is also an excellent resource when studying for the VCP. Good choice!
 
I am not looking to get the VCP anytime soon as it requires you to take that expensive class. I am actually studying for the CCNA right now and learning VMware as it is good to learn and a skill to have.
 
I also have that book and am close to finishing..but it will be by my side even after I get my VCP cert just like my Todd Lammle Sybex CCNA book still by my side as a reference after I got my CCNA last year.;)
 
Does this book cover everything needed for the VCP? or do you want a VCP centric book?
 
You definately need the exam blueprint which you can get off of VMware's site which contains links to a lot of information.

I'm using the blueprint, reading this book, and i'm going to take the troubleshooting class in March.

I also have a lab at home similiar to yours and i'm also fortunate to be working on a Production environment and in process for an upgrade.
 
I know a few people (including myself) who have used that book as a primary resource along with the blueprint to pass the exam. It definitely goes over what you'll need to know and combined with your home lab, you should be good shape.

As others have suggested, you really should stick to the blueprint. The book + the blueprint isn't a bad idea.

The book is great, I know, because I've read it and several others. Its out of date here and there and that is the crux of the problem with books in general, it has nothing to do with this one in particular. Maximums and such were greatly expanded with 4.1, and several other misc details will be wrong. It's a great starting point if you're trying to learn, so read it, but don't use it as the bible.

Just as something off the top of my head, "tech support mode" in ESXi is fully supported as of 4.1, it wasn't supported previously, in fact you had to type "unsupported" just to make a prompt appear to type the password. That is probably not on the test. I got the real impression when I took it that they tried to avoid updates and changes, and that the questions were geared to specifics that have remained true since vSphere's release.

The VCP blueprint is updated pretty quickly after a release, all the links last I looked have been updated to 4.1. So the possibility that a 4.1 question could be on the exam is definitely there, well, at least they leave themselves open to the option of putting one on there.
 
FYI, VMware is offering 2nd chance on the VCP until July 31, 2011. You have to use the code: VCPTAKE1 when you register at Pearsonvue.com. I just booked my test for mid-April, price was cheaper than expected. If you do not pass the first time, you can retake for free by re-registering with code: VCPTAKE2.

From personal experience I can say that no book or blueprint will make up for actual experience. If you do not have experience with the Enterprise license features then passing the VCP410 becomes a gamble in terms of which of the pool questions you will receive.
