Itanium vs c2d

Not to be a smart ass, but did you think that maybe INTEL's site might have the answer :p

Unless you have specific needs (e.g. you run a business), you're not going to need an Itanium. Games and multimedia software simply aren't available for that platform. Now, if you want to run an Oracle database with a few terabytes of data, Itanium might be something to look into.

thanks mattsaccount. i am curious. i want to know the differences between 64bit desktop procs and itanium fully 64bit procs.

For one, they aren't compatible with the same software at all. Core 2 Duo uses EM64T which is an extension of the x86 instruction set. Itanium is uses the IA64 instruction set. Both are quite different. For one the Itanium isn't compatible with the x86 instruction set and can not natively run x86 software.

Here is some more information on the subject.

well, itanium is one of the worst processors ever, and core 2 duo is the best, you do the math.

also, why the heck do companies still invest in itanium servers?

Wow... could you be any more wrong?

Itaniums are very good at what they do, though that is limited by the software. With proper software and realistic expectations Itanium will perform very well. That's why companies buy them... because they fill their needs.

People need to get off the Itanium hatewagon. While Itanium is a failure business wise, it's not a failure performance wise. Quit mixing the two up.

My guess is he wanted an answer in layman's terms, intel's site often doesn't give that, know what I mean?

In laymans terms the two aren't compatible, and they are used for completely different applications and are next to impossible to compare.

See, now I bet THAT bit of advice is useful to the OP.
