I was wondering if anyone here has this particular title or a similar job. Basically, to make a long story short, I'm going back for a second interview with a networking company in my area. I initially applied for a network technician position. I was one of the top three candidates but they ended up offering the job to another candidate. They did however mention that they had an IT Procurement/Purchasing Specialist position open and they thought I'd be a good fit because of my business and sales experience. I have a general understanding of what the position entails, and I'm confident in my ability to fulfill the position adequately, but I don't have any experience in this exact type of work. I'd like to hear from others who are already in this line of work just to get some pointers, see what their day to day duties include, what I should do to prepare for my interview, etc. Any input is greatly appreciated!

dont know if im the right guy to be giving advice as i have been working in IT for only two years

however some observations i have would be to decide what type of company / role this is your applying for

i.e. does it want a guy who can buy and manage a load of laptops a load of deskops store each recorded somewhere and know whom has what when.i.e fairly standard procurement job

or does it want a guy who can find bargains and work deals with suppliers to get the required gear. i.e. very budget limited

does the job title spread into technical support. i.e. when you have bought a bunch of laptops will you have to wipe them do clean installs ghost the drive image so that when they come back apparently broken you can re install at a moments notice. - our companies procurement guy does this

alternitively are you going to spend al day on the phone ordering stuff from ink cartridges to new phones, phone chargers to kettle leads, and not actually touch any it stuff (sounds very dull to me)

Mine is going to be a hands on type of position. Basically I'll be in charge of making proposal packages for clients within our approved vendors (i.e. a client wants 2 servers, 10 workstations, and 10 copies of MS Office, it's my job to show them the options they have and help them figure out what is going to fulfill their needs along with being the most cost effective.) Then I'll be doing a little hands on work as well, working with switches, general server setup, TCIP, stuff like that.

Sounds like a typical technical sales position. If you like sales, then go for it.

sounds like you get to play with other peoples money and try to get them to spend more then

sounds awesome really
