It may sound dumb, but...

Ok.

How about putting a 939 in a 940 socket? Is the pin grid or pin out different?

just get an X2

edit: looks like you already have one
someone wanting 4 cores?

Ideally, 16 cores. But i'd settle for dual core + dual cpu.

What about the systems is preventing SMP with 939s?

Or is it a legal/money issue?

LOL. youll need an eight way dual core opteron system
eek.gif

what would this be used for?

939 have the second and third HT link disabled on them. they need the second one for two-way servers, and the 3rd one for up to 8-way and higher.

Athlon 64s have the disabled Hypertransport bridges as lithium said.

If you want a 16 cores, then yeah, you're gonna be shelling out money.

A motherboard that supports 8 dual core opterons will probably set you back $2000, and an 800 series dual core opteron are probably around $1000 each.

Going Opteron isn't cheap. You need the chips, the motherboard, a new power supply, and finally new ram.

Not cheap. If your into games, what you've got in your sig makes more sense. I'd just add another 7800GTX if I were you.
