It is time.

I'm running just under 4.2GHz on air cooling right now. My CPU does seem to need more VCore than yours does. I have to use 1.475v and not an increment less. I'm not sure what you mean by the CPU hold down issues. I haven't heard of any issues with the CPU socket which is what I believe you are referring to.

Yes, the socket.....I had a brain freeze...........a guy on the EVGA forums, who is quite experienced, went to change out his 920 C0 for a D0 and lost a handful of pins. He had some pretty good photos.

I don't think there has been any feedback on what the result was, but he didn't seem to have mounted the original incorrectly...he simply opened the hold-down plate, removed the CPU and a dozen or so pins came along for the ride. Comp had been working until then.

Needless to say..........RMA.

On another note.........my CPU seems to have hit the wall where I am. I've tried to increase the VCore and VTT to be able to increase the BClk, but I think I've gone as far as my CPU will let me............I know the board has more in it........but I can't see replacing the CPU just to gain a few MHz.

Man, it seems like there are a fair number of problems with those Dominators.

yeah there has been.. my friend went through 3 rma's with the dominators on his i7..

Had one Dominator failure in the last couple of years and that is all we test with.

The Dominator DIMMs come with fans, and in Dan's case, he was not using it.

Three words of advice: USE THE FAN

It is there for reason. :)

I've never heard of pins coming out of any LGA socket with the CPU. I don't even see how that's possible without the pins getting hot enough to get "welded" to the CPU. In any case I don't believe the i7 920 D0's are worth buying if you've already got a C0.

While people can get c0 for $210~$220, and people are paying $270~$280 for D0.

I would have liked to have gotten a D0, but I wouldn't have paid that much of a price increase for one.

IF you already have a C0, a D0 isnt worth it... I think that is pretty clear. Performance wise, the i7's reach a peak performance/speed ratio at about 3.6GHz... going past you will see diminished returns on performance unless you are... a benchmark junkie. But, if you are building an i7 system with a premium board thats in the $300-400 range with $100 of ram and a $80-100 cpu cooler anyways, paying an extra $50 for a D0 is a drop in the hat that means hitting higher clocks with less voltage (and heat most likely, although this is a slim comparison). It could mean that you can hit 3.6 or 3.8 GHz with an air cooler that cost you $50 instead of $100... and sometimes, the D0 is just what you get without paying anything extra. I got my SLBEJ for maybe $20-30 more than what a SLBCH was at the time.

That thread needs better pics. :(

I read about 1/2 through it but could not take the 13 year old broken english of the guy.

I'm not sure I buy his story though. Although that may just be because he seems to be 13 in his posts.

The guy is French-Canadian.
He and I have spoken alot via PM on various issues with the Classified and also some water-cooling stuff.

He's an IT guy for somebody in Montreal, I think. As far as computers, he knows what he's talking about......but his communication skillz in english are a little rough around the edges.

I sent him a message yesterday concerning any updates on the problem, no reply yet.

That explains some. Like I said, it was hard to figure out what was really going on there because of the language. Perhaps it's a bad habit, but man when you sound 13... I just stop believeing/listening to what you have to say.

I've never seen anything like what's in those pictures though.

That excuses grammar errors, but not the typing/spelling errors or the general lack of a coherent structure to his posts. He definitely makes it a lot harder to understand him than it could be.
