Well if your goal is to catch me I will give you a little inside information.....
With one phone call and a casual walk out to my garage, I can put out 115k+ ppd.
That doesn't include the 9800GX2 I have at work waiting for a screw set. :D

damn whats your avg ppd? im pulling 50k ppd with just the cards have no clue what the vm clients are doing.

whats the avg ppd you can achieve with a dual nehalem single 16 core vm

Not very good.
VMware player max's out at 8 cores.
So you need to use VirtualBox which is not that efficient.
To maximize your PpD .............
You'd be best running Linux as your OS.
Modding the vid cards bios's so they run at the best overclocked speeds at boot.
Then running the GPU client under WINE.

Well with a bit of help from gkanakis, Ax missed his T-day overtake on me.

I'm socked no one noticed one of our top folders drop to 0 ppd over night and didn't say anything.

I was sure someone would have connected the two. I was expecting shens to be called within the first 10 post of this thread.

Anywho, Most of my i7 parts are here.... -bigadv here I come. Wont be quite the pop in ppd, but this time they wont be borrowed.
 
how much does an i7 put out on big adv? How about a dual i7 (OK, xeon, but you get the idea)?

Never really wondered much but I think im curious now as long as hospital bills arent too bad, maybe selling of a few of my GPU's would split the diff
 
You guys suck. Now I have to figure out how to talk the wife into letting me build an i7 folder after I just put together a 4x 8800gt box.

:cool: Actually, You and I swapped the 18th position several times the day or two *before* Thanksgiving day, so I'm still satisfied that I met my goal. I just didn't get to *keep* it for more than a few hours at a time before you rolled right back over me :D

...and here I thought you were ramping up to keep me away, thus adding more "D" for the cause! ;)

You can't run a 16-core VM with HT, but if you run a native Linux installation you should be able to put out 50-60k PPD. Or you could run two 8-core VMs and do about 40k PPD instead.

You can run a VM with 16 cores with the latest version of VirtualBox.
But its not very efficient and does not scale well above 8 core either.

A dual i7 will do more like 40-50k PpD running native Linux.
As your working with server/workstation mobo, the ability to overclock the cpu's is limited.
Look at real time numbers Here on the FF.

Actually using VBox, 16 cores performs worse than just 8. :(
 
What do you get on a dual 1366 Xeon box if you don't run HT and use 1x VMPlayer on the 8 physical cores forgetting the virtual ones? Due to the lack of programming support past 8 cores you might benefit even though you lose raw performance.

It has to do with the PPD scaling on more cores, as it's not exactly linear for the SMP client.

Dual 4core VM will generate less PPD then a single 8core VM.

Actually, PPD scaling is fairly linear between 4 and 8 cores. The issue is that running a VM across 8 full cores might give better performance than running an 8-core VM on a 4-core CPU with HT. There would probably be an increase, but I have a feeling two stock-clocked Xeons wouldn't perform any better than a single overclocked i7.
 
I'd be interested if someone had the means to try a dual xeon box without HT. There are many things to consider if someone is building a -bigadv boxen with GPUs on the side. Even if the performance of a brutally overclocked i7 is comparable to a dual-Xeon with HT disabled, wouldn't the Xeon box use less power?
 
Dual xeon, that's the thing, a dual board would probly eat up more power I think

As I understand it the faster you complete your WUs the bigger the bonus, so if you can make an i7 rig match the performance of a dual-xeon rig by overclocking then the point value would be identical.

I'm just wondering if you take 2x 80W Xeons in a server boardhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117186. then you compare that setup to a regular i7 that is overclocked to 3.8 or 4.2 to match the performance, how does the power usage compare. Yes you have more components running in the server but how much power does an 130W i7 use at those OC levels? If the dual Xeon rig has a ppd/W advantage it might be worth the extra cost for the rig. Has anyone seen any life-cycle problems with those i7 920s clocked up over 4GB? They have only been on the market for a year.
 
That only leaves 30 watts to play with, even on an OC, I think a board that would use 2 would kill any power diff

Hell fir the price might as well get nehale s and 16 core that beast!
