Hello,

I bought a XFX 280x double dissapation. The card seems to be working fine but I noticed that GPU-z sees the card as a Tahiti card and when i try to install amd catalyst it just sits on detecting system hardware when it is attempting to install the drivers. I ran valley benchmark too and got a pretty poor score a little over 1500 which seems really low for this card and it shows up as a 7970. Do I just have a bad card, is there a different method I can use to install a different display driver than amd catalyst?

A 280x is a 7970 (Tahiti). 1500 is a typical score at 1080p.

I don't see anyone with a benchmark score that low with a 280x, most I've seen in the 2200-2300 range. I see people getting a typical score of 1600 at 1440p not 1080p.

Also look at the screenshot:

Now the above is a very good score and is a higher end 280x than mine and is probably overclocked. Notice how it says its an r9 200 series

Here are my results:

I would say something is wrong.

You have a R9 series card.... but it has a Tahiti core architecture...

You have literally a 7970. They changed the decals and that it.

I think the software just detects the series of cards, the guy that posted that said he has a 280x, I don't see any reason for him to lie and use a 290 lol.
