I figured I'd ask here before I go to ATI.

I just got an X800XL AGP. I've had 2 different issues (different games).

! I can attribute to the game (known issue) but the other I chalk up to the card. I was playing EAW last night and about 90 minutes in, my PC hard locked and the monitor shut down. I had to hit reset to recover. The room was 73F and the case was under 100F (my PSU was right at 100F). I'm running at stock speed.

I'll try the ATi tray tools tonight to monitor the GPU temp (at work now) and see if it's an overheat, but after that time- and running 1024x76a, 4xaa 4xaf, I don't think so as there has been zero artifacting, just a seemingly random, hard crash.

Any ideas?
 
Yeah, monitor the GPU temp, but I also think the PSU could be suspect. What are you using? Also, did you upgrade from an nVidia card? If so, did you uninstall the forceware drivers? Use drivercleaner or any other utility?

I had this problem about 2 years now. So far the card is fresh it will happened only slightly, but with time to time it will progress.

This glitch can happened any time in any condition, 3D or desktop.

In my case the card shuts off monitor for brief periods of time (1sec off 5 sec on) <this can last up to 15 minutes, or it can shut off monitor for few minutes straight. Also your symptoms will be: sound will be glitchin at the same time when your XL will shut off monitor, CPU usage will be 100%.
Also when that happens try to run Task Manager and you will see that there will be 100 of processes of CLI.exe, when that happens the only way is to restart.
But there is a little trick, all you have to do is install Drivers only. That way when it starts acting up, it will not drag CLI.exe.

You probably will ask why I didn't returned the card to ATI, well I'm getting a new PC with x1800XT in it. The specs are in sig.
Anyways, tell me how it goes, try talk to ATI peeps but they didn’t helped me.

i've never experienced this problem with the X800XL (knock on wood). but i've seen the exact same things happen and the culprit was the power supplly.
 
doesnt seem like a power supply issue like some of you have said. seems like its something to do with the drivers because he did say it opens 100 things of CLI.exe


 
I only have the drivers inhaled, CLI is part of the Catalyst not the drivers. And 100 CLIs is only triggered when card starts to glitch with a full catalyst on board of my PC.

With drivers only, at least my PC is not locking up (the 100 of processes of CLI.exe), but I still get the same monitor shut off. During a day I can count at least 40 of those shut offs. I got used to them, no big deal. Soon I'm getting my new PC so it will not bother me.

I'm not sure about the PSU. I have 350W Antec True Blue with 1 CDrom, floppy, X-Fi, x800xl, p4 2.8E and 2x512 Kingston hyper x.

Still I'm not worrying about that crap anymore.
My new rig will be soon :p

I don't think it's power.

I was gussing heat, max temps are 60C (50C is more typical) for the GPU. Is that the die or the board itself? The heatsink never feels that warm, and the fan is running just fine. Case temps are OK.

My system is well vented, and the room is in the low 70's. Mine is a refurb, so that is a possibility. and it only sets in after 'a while' I've seen it be 15 minutes, I've seen it be 90.

It is a refurb for a reason :(
 
Searching here and other forums, Ive wondered why others haven't commented on the sheer volume of ATI cards w/ this issue. Seems like a driver issue that has not been resolved by ATI, just speculation.

ATI Tray Tools reports my x800xl max temp as 53, min of 42, and idle of 44-45. This is over the course of a week. When I touch the heatsink after gaming, it's very warm (almost doesn't pass the 5-second test). 60C seems a little high and the fact that the heatsink isn't that warm could mean that it isn't making good contact. I think it'd be worth pulling it and re-applying thermal compound. Other than that, I recommend uninstalling the drivers, then removing traces in safe mode with DriverCleaner. After that, reinstall and see if there's any change.
