Issues with Pentium D Processor

I recently Purchased an Pentium D 2.8 GHz .Its model number is Intel Pentium D 915*. Its specification is Dual core with 4 MB L2 cache. The motherboard that I am using is Intel 945GNT and the RAM is DDR2-667MHz from Transcend .

I just have got 2 querries.
1) Cache Memory since this CPU has 4 MB cache (2*2MB), but when I go to BIOS (CMOS Setup) it just shows 2MB, the vendorer says that this is a dual core processor therefore each core shares 2MB respectively which will not be shown in BIOS but internally its 4MB L2 cache. So I have doubt if they have supplied me the right processor, is there any software through which I can trace the Processor Model Number in windows?

2) How much is maximum safe temprature of this CPU? In BIOS i checked its 62 Degree Centigrade (143.6 Degree Farenhite) with fan rotation speed of around 2950 RPM. Is it safe temprature? God knows how much it will reach when I load windows and Heavy applications.

It's a 9 series so it should be much cooler then 62. If I had to guess it should be no hotte than my old 930d which was in the 40's and high 30's.

1. You have this confused. The CPU itself does not have 4MB cache, there is 2MB per core. In some BIOS setups, only one core will be displayed showing 2MB of cache. That is normal, don't be worried about it. If you are concerned about your CPU type, you can use a program called CPU-Z to tell you if the processor is a Prescott/Smithfield (5xx/D8xx) or a Cedar-Mill/Presler (6xx/D9xx).

2. I highly doubt that your heatsink is secured properly or that there is no thermal material between the processor and the heatsink. The highest that I saw the old 520 Prescott go was 48C idle where this a Presler CPU, based on two Cedar-Mill cores. The Presler is supposed to run cooler than the single core Prescott. Again, get the heatsink checked.

3. Get the BIOS updated on your Intel motherboard. From past experience, the first version of their BIOS' will not accurately read the CPU temperature.

Something tells me that this computer stinks of something called "Tier-1".

Thanks fireluxx, I think I will get my BIOS Updated. Cuz at such a high temprature the fan should rotate at atleast 5.4 RPM/sec creating a lot of noise. But its rotation is around 2.9. Anyways what is the maximum cover temprature this processor can withstand, without causing any harm??

The Intel heatsinks come with a variable speed fan which is temperature controlled. Once your temperature approached 50C, that fan should have kicked in to high gear. Seeing that it is failing to do that, this could be one of two things:

1. Your heatsink is not mounted/installed properly (A push pin is not applying contact pressure with the CPU).
2. Your BIOS has a setting for quiet fan mode operation. You may want to check to see if that has been enabled. If so, turn it off. That feature is only to be used with fans that don't have a temperature sensor.

INTEL PENTIUM 915 were based on new C1 Stepping, I sold mine bfore CORE 2 and that CPU rocked my world. The TEMP of this 915 Never Rose Above 40C . But I was using ARTIC SILVER 5 Thermal paste.

The Thermal Paste on INTEL's Stocked HSF really sux. Apply some Artic SIlver 5 and ull see the difference in TEMP on your 915  .

Also you can be sure its 4MB, if you have any doublets. Download CPU-Z and see what it says.

Thanks for the help guys. :)

I am not sure whether ARTIC SILVER 5 Thermal paste will be available here or not, so I have to seek for an alternative if I don't get it here, Can anyone suggest me of an alternative?.

One last question, Is my PC compitable for Windows Vista ? In future if I want to upgrade myself to Windows Vista
