Hi Folks...Well I followed this site's advice on trying to overclock the p4 2.4a prescott but I'm not getting any results. Was hoping that you guys may shed some light ont he situation for me. I'm also aware that it just might be the card I have. The MSI utility says the card runs at about 46C at rest. The CPU just has the stock intel heatsink and fan. I've tried setting the bus at 166 and 180+ both will not post.

Here are some details of the hardware i have

P4 2.4a Prescott SL7E8
MSI PT880 NEO-LSR
1 GIG RAM DDR400 PC3200 Corsair Value select
AGP - BFG 6800 GT OC
2 WD HDS
1 mistusmi cd-rom
SB Augidy 2 sound card
420 Watt PS

Any information would be greatly appreaciated.
Thanks in Advance!

I've got the same setup as you and am getting good overclocking results. First off, make sure you have the latest BIOS, that should be version 1.7. If you are using the original 1.1 BIOS, the board will not overclock at all. After checking that, make sure you have your memory timings and voltage set properly.

Another thing I did was scartch off the thermal tape from the stock heatsink...is that a big no-no?

Also when you say "Not Overclock at all" do you mean it just fails or it doesn't even have the funcitonality to set your FSB....my current motherboard does allow you to change the FSB.

When you say "scratched" off the thermal tape, what tool did you use to do so? And, did you apply thermal paste to the heatsink before mounting it?

When I said the board wouldn't overclock at all, I just meant that it would not work when you try to raise FSB, mem speeds, etc.

I've no idea how much experience you have with this sort of thing so don't take offence to questions I ask. Do you know what I mean by BIOS version? I ask because in your previous post you mention that your current motherboard allows you to change FSB so I just want to ensure you are not confusing the BIOS version with the mainboard revision. Also, if you did not update the BIOS yourself, then you are very likely running version 1.1 and this is preventing you from having any success at overclocking.

If you are not familiar with BIOS flashing, install and run the Live Update utility from the CD or download it from MSI, install it and run it. Use it to check for a BIOS update and then just follow the instructions to flash from DOS. As long as you follow the instructions to the letter, everything should be ok but do be aware that when flashing the BIOS there is always a slight risk of rendering your board unbootable if something goes wrong.

Hi,
I have the same CPU but OCZ 4200 DDR and Abit IC7-G
at this point I managed to do 2.4 @ 3300 with 184 bus. Stock voltage CPU and DDR.

So I believe that you must change some of your bios settings.

Good Luck
