Issues with Foldix - Help Requested

I have a box sitting here unused so I obtained a copy of Foldix so that I could put it to work. The system has a built in ethernet nic - for some reason this will not work regardless with foldix -it hangs on the DHCP.

I went out and obtained a nic card to put in the rig, just today I did this. Problem I have now is to tell it to use that nic card as it still looks for the Eth0 and not the Eth1. How would I be able to change this? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.
 
Can you disable on onboard NIC in the BIOS then I assume nix should default back to Eth>what ever.

Just a work around idea form someone who knows jack about nix.

I just thought of this too and went ahead and did this. Sure enough it now does detects the new nic card however - It's now stuck at

"Getting DHCP info: eth0: Setting Full-Duplex based on MII#1 link parnter capabilities of 41e1"

Any ideas why I would be stuck on this level?
 
Nope. In my experiance with shitnix either it works, or the hardware is bad.

Does you DHCP server work for other boxen? Not really a nix guy here...

Every other computer that's in this house is connected to this router and it works... FOr some reason maybe the Foldix is bad...

I do not reckon that the nic is bad cause I have tried it on my other computer to ensure that it works and sure enough it does.
 
Have you tried a different cat 5 cable? I've seen bad cables bork DHCP requests.

Tried that and also tried another port on the router all with the same result of last said hang up.

 
hav eyou gotten foldix to work on a different box?

Router/switch type? If the router/switch forcing full duplex and the NIC (s) only support half duplex? Or vise verse, foldix forcing full duplex and your using a hub?

I have a D-Link 514 Router at home and no it's not set to one specific speeds. It's at auto and every link we have are autoconnected to Full-Duplex speeds.

 
I think I have an idea what the problem is and I'll check it out.

What brand of offboard NIC is it, just in case I'm wrong? ( :rolleyes: )

The drivers for the NVidia nic are built into Foldix. Does it boot if you do the prime95 option? That skips the network config, IIRC. It's been a while since I've played with it, though... If you can run that, and then switch to a different console (alt-F1, alt-F2, etc) and log in, you can try doing the script one line at a time. I'll give you more instructions if you can get to a shell.

When I go into Prime95 - it gets right to the Prime95 stress test.
Edit: I'm not able to Alt-f1/etc into other consoles at all nor I'm able to stop the stress test either :|

EDIT2 : I tried to reboot into Linux - and it detects the built in card and etc and all is going well now... : :eek:

Edit 3: The DHCP gave me no problem but when I cfgfold - all is fine until I do getfold and it'll say error due to wget/ftp/ or whatever. And I can't get any more than that. :(

Edit 4: I've tried Testnet and it tells me nothing worthy, netstat -rn gives me nothing as well. So I tried /etc/fold start and it says fold starting, so I went in top to verify this and nope nothing is running. I'm about to put a 12ga. slug through this rig

Edit 5: I rebooted again and before I logged on, folding has started and I proceed to login to check top, I see a 99.9% cpu usage but I cannot confirm that it's up and running properly, how would I go about this?

UPDATES: I'm redownloading the ISO and burn it to the CD in case it was a bad install/image burn. I'll keep you guys up to date.

Update 2: This had no effect at all. I guess I just am having BAD luck :mad:
 
Check the log (hit alt-F5 or run "cat /fold/1/FAHlog.txt") and see what it's doing.

I'm using the latest (2.6.17.13); if anyone wants other devices that are supported by Linux in general let me know and I'll be sure to include them.

Other things I'ma play with:
- start N instances of prime95, not one, and maybe a console :eek:
- better directory layout on my end; maybe a "how-to-build" somewhere?
- suggestions?

Last point of interest: I could add sata/scsi support. Does anyone want this, or would this be too dangerous to your "real" machines? Releasing two versions (one with, one without) would be fairly time-consuming to maintain, I think. Tell me what you think.

 
I love you mage and it looks as if I would be able to finally get that one rig up and running just for folding :)

Be sure to keep us up to date on when you are releasing the new iso image...

good question... :)

One recurring issue on the board is how to install FAH as a service (or what ever the nix deal is, have FAH start up system start up), this obviously has that. Auto configs client based on hardware specs (-big etc.).

Auto installs the OS, some folks have hard time installing nix (maybe moot point).

Frankly, I get confused figuring out which freaking flavor to download when I'm goofing with nix. Seems like there is 90 million versions for everything and anything.

modify /etc/rc.d/rc.local and add

echo 100 > /proc/sys/vm/inactive_clean_percent
echo 2 10 20 > /proc/sys/vm/pagecache

#folding
cd /fah1
./FAH5 &

and change to wherever your folding files are,
and change to the version of the folding software you use
and add flags as desired ( -advmethods, etc)
then reboot

re: sata/scsi support.... don't most newer motherboards have BIOS setting to use sata drive in IDE mode ? If so, then I don't see a need to build in sata support.

ease of use suggestion: something in install script that alerts the human when to remove the install CD .

What exactly do these do? I haven't heard of this, and a Google shows that nobody else knows either. 25 results, and none of them has an answer. Heck, one of them is *this thread*. All of them seem to mention RHEL3 - and RHEL4 was released in February 2005. I think this may be a solution without a problem. Oh, and RHEL3 used a 2.4 kernel with 2.6 features backported.

But I'd like to have your input on this - if I can get better swap performance out of Linux, I'd like it ;)

The reason that this project exists is as a dead-easy folding box install. It takes literally 60 seconds to go from bare metal to a folding machine. Let's see you do that with Fedora ;)

Simply put, the rig wasn't working and I've already out it to folding right now in the meantime... My borging goal reflected the change already. I'm running Xubuntu with Foldix but one concern is that when it reboots, I've to start it manually again... Whereas with Foldix I wouldn't have to.

Edit: Also my cpu hsf fan were dead so I just plopped on a 80mm Torando fan there and one for the case as well... It's chugging along pretty well. I'm going to be waiting for the newer Foldix to be released and then I'll be set in running it :)
