Issues with Crossfire and Driver Installs

Well, I'm having a nagging issue that is bothering me.

Running Vista 64 -- here is my now required method of uninstalling old drivers and installing new ones.

Control Panel, Programs -- Change ATI -- Express Uninstall
Reboot into safe mode
Driversweeper
-- While in safemode, Windows will automatically install VGA drivers for the cards. I've tried to tell it not to, but it will do it no matter what -- even in safe mode.
Reboot into normal mode
Unpack drivers
Go into Device Manager and hit update drivers, point to the new driver folder and install.
Install CCC.


This seems to work. If I try to install drivers/CCC in safe mode, it fails to load the detection driver. If I try to install drivers via the ATI installer in regular mode, it fails and says incompatible hardware. I assume this is because Windows already forced drivers onto the cards.

My main issue is how can I get this installation to go a bit smoother? One card is an Asus, one card is a HIS -- when Windows forces drivers onto them -- the Asus loads, but the HIS fails to install. I assume somewhere in this process, something is getting borked.

Any suggestions?

What drivers are you using? If it's either the Catalyst 8.10 or the 8.10 "hotfix" it seems that those drivers have problems with Crossfire. My Crossfire will bluescreen if I try either or if I try to install 8.7 (8.5 beta's) it will load Windows Vista with the correct resolution then for some reason the Ati video driver will crap out and the res drops back to 800x600. I went back to the 8.9 drivers and they booted right up but this is after several tries installing the Catalyst drivers. I'd love to use the hotfix for Farcry 2 since it should be in today.
 
Cat 8.10's and 8.10 Hotfix. I didn't have Crossfire prior to 8.10, only a single 4850 -- Have not tried 8.9's.

Is there ANY way to prevent Vista from automatically trying to install drivers? I mean, it's not even asking me, it just does it.
 
Don't use the hotfix #2, it gave me the BSOD.

Anways, a way to make installation go smoother is to install the latest driver. Reboot the computer, do not login to windows, reboot again. I've done this and dont get the driver install error. If I login after the first reboot, I get the error message.

I know what you mean,

what I learned was do everything you said, uninstall ATI CCC/drivers from Control Panel,
use DriverCleaner in safe mode to get rid of all remnants, delete all possible *.inf files, and then boot into Vista64 normally. It will then detect two video cards, and what I do is I go into device manager and remove them (del key or right click -> uninstall)

and then I run CCC install,
reboot,
reboot,
reboot and it works.

When do you install the new drivers? CCC will install fine, but it won't even give me the option to install the drivers via the combined installer.
