Im currently using the 158.24 drivers for my 8800gtx with vista ultimate 64bit when i update them to the 158.43 on the nvidia site i get "display driver has stopped respoding" every 30 - 60 seconds. Does any1 else have this problem and was able to fix it?

download the old ones and reinstall them...but they should also be in a folder on your hard drive with the version number unless you deleted them. should be C:\Nvidia or something

That's most likely, this:

http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1186433&highlight=TDR

And is a sign that something isn't right, be it driver or hardware configuration. But it's a good thing you now get the TDR instead of a blue screen, right? ;)

I'd check to make sure everything is nice and cool. Possibly run some stress tests on your rig to ensure no issues. Run memory diagnostics. Lastly check to make sure you're feeding enough juice to your card. If all else fails, it'll be a driver issue, but I haven't read/heard many negatives about the new driver. If it only seems to be a driver, I'd submit a bug report if at all possible.

Are you overclocking any components?

Yeah im overclocking my cpu but its at stock volt and its been fine for months... ive had vista since feb and this is the first drivers ive had this happen to :(. And i dont think its a power issue i got a 700w ocz psu. I reinstalled the 158.24's and its running fine again i guess ill wait .

Does any1 know which r the fastest drivers for 64bit vista? is there much difference between 158.42 / 43? i might give the .42's ago tonight.

From my experince, the latest nvidia driver need to be uninstalled first, before being instalIed again, or problem happen.. (this never happened with XP drivers) suggest the following method of installing the 15x series of nvidia drivers for vista.

1. Download latest driver.
2. Boot into SAFE mode. (press F8 of O/S choice menu)
3. Uninstall the old "nvidia drivers" with Add/Remove program menu.
4. Install the new drivers.
5. Re-boot.

I would guess its something to do with vista now allowing "system files" or "drivers" to be over wrtten while they are still loaded or something like that.

[Snip..] (this never happened with XP drivers)

That's simply not true. For years driver architects and System Admins have advocated removing previous firmware before installing updated firmware, via safe mode, on system critical hardware. That has been and will remain the preferred method with Windows based Operating Systems, for some time to come. Even then, especially in previous Windows' OSes (including Vista too) latent registry entries can/will remain, causing driver issue of un-estimated proportions.

The rest of your post is accurate to the punch. ;)

Well the .42 work fine.... ill give safe mode a go with the .43

*edit* it worked :D.

Standard procedure with me no matter what drivers are being installed. Always uninstall the old first, reboot, reinstall with the new. Very few problems.

do you mean drivers and not firmware? I update firmware every time I am able to reboot a server at work and never once have I "uninstalled firmware". I don't even think it's possible. I typically never uninstall a driver either, not unless I see specific instructions to do so.

The 158.43's run great for me.
Games like Prey and Quake 4 run flawlessly. Lost Planet DX10 demo works great too.
I've never had an issue with the scaling ratio's in any of the 150+ drivers either.
The difference in FPS between Vista and XP is pretty much now negligible and in some cases now faster in Vista.
I now find myself more and more in Vista and less and less in XP.

I do appreciate not everyone has similar fortune, but for me Vista and Nvidia are finally getting past all the Beta nonsense and becoming a more mature, solid platform to game on.

You caught me, red handed, pants down.. and all that jazz..

Yes, there most certainly is a difference between firmware and drivers (most of the time).

But I'm not a driver or firmware engineer. I made the post rather quickly and funny enough, even those words interchanged still validate the contents of the message.

It's only been recently that firmware updates have gone (semi)seamlessly when applying one level of firmware over another; without uninstalling.

Most, if not all, System Integrators and Sys Admins will still recommend for the end-user to use the computer management console available to them; disable the firmware, uninstall the firmware (just like you would a driver), reboot, return to safe mode, and finally install your firmware (driver). It's proper, pro-active troubleshooting procedure.

So, was it really worth nitpicking? If you knew what I meant, then what's all the hub-bub, bub?

Are you running the beta of Dreamscene? (I see you have 64-Ultimate).

64-Ultimate + Dreamscene + nVidia drivers + 800GTX would give me 'driver stopped responding' errors in a repeat cycle every few seconds until a hard crash eventually. First it didn't work, then the next driver revision fixed it, then the next broke it etc. I've just switched off Dreamscene for now.
