I have built in RAID on my motherboard (ABIT KN9S AM2 Socket) and have had two 250GB WD Sata drives connected to it for the past several months with no issue.
Yesterday I formatted my main drive (my RAID is just a storage drive) which is a 10,000RPM WD Raptor 150GB drive and installed Vista Ultimate 64-bit edition. After it installed and I instaled my drives for my chipset from the nvidia site (they're the correct drives), I got a BSOD. When I restarted I got an error regarding my RAID saying it was "degraded". All of my data was there and after several searches, it looked like I needed to rebuild my array. I made a copy of all my data after that. I think the BSOD was caused by the RAID issue (I can't remember the exact BSOD message but it made me come to that conclusion but I'm not 100% sure).
I then rebooted into the NVidia RAID software and attempted to rebuild. It was sitting on the screen and it looked like it was accessing the hard drive. After doing some searching, it looked like it wasn't doing anything (it's RAID 1, it shouldn't take as long as RAID 5 to rebuild; it's just a straight copy). So I restarted my machine and tried again. This time it was listed as an error and re-adding the second drive to the array and hitting rebuild didn't do anything.
I decided to reboot into Vista and run the MediaShield nVidia software and re-created the array. This worked fine (unfortunately, all data was lost but that's what back-ups are for!). Since then, the RAID has been working fine but I just recently got a message from Vista saying there was an error on my RAID but then it disappeared. MediaShield still says everything is fine and healthy. An odd thing I found was that one of my drives in the array is listed as connected to SATA 2.0 and the other SATA 1.1. My motherboard, as far as I know (and according to the Newegg specifications), does not have SATA 1.1.
Is this normal? Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't think either drives are dying as they are fairly new, I hear no unusual sounds from them and the S.M.A.R.T. status is healthy on both (and has always been).
Here are my system specs:
Vista Ultimate 64-Bit Edition
Athlon 64 4600+
ABit KN9S AM2 Motherboard
2GB DDR800
1x WD Raptor 150GB 10,000RPM HD
2x WD 250GB 7,200RPM HD
nVidia Geforce 7600GT
Here are the two events logged in event viewer for the RAID (it logged two at the sametime):
Disclaimer: I'm new with RAID and am using it as I really need a reliable way to store all of my data as well as client data.
